The Ministry of Defence has entered into a significant agreement worth ₹1,950 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited to procure two sophisticated Mountain Radars for the Indian Air Force, marking a substantial advancement in homegrown defence capabilities.

This contract, categorized under Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured), underscores the government’s commitment to promoting Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the Make in India initiative in the field of defence production.

Indigenous Technology Backbone

The Mountain Radars have been conceived and developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment, a part of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and will be manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited. These radars are specifically designed to be deployed in high-altitude and mountainous areas, thereby enhancing surveillance and early warning capabilities.

Boost to Air Defence Capability

The introduction of these systems is set to fortify India’s air defence network, improve monitoring in strategically crucial regions, and bolster the nation's overall security readiness.

Reducing Import Dependency

This initiative emphasizes the growing reliance on domestic defence manufacturing, a decrease in dependency on foreign equipment, and the development of India’s internal defence sector.

Conclusion

The ₹1,950 crore agreement represents a vital move towards enhancing India’s technological autonomy, with the new radar systems poised to improve the Indian Air Force's operational capacity in difficult terrains.
