Meet Shivani: The First Woman Constable to Earn Out-of-Turn Promotion in BSF History

In a groundbreaking moment for the Border Security Force (BSF), Constable Shivani has made history by becoming the first woman constable ever to receive an out-of-turn promotion — a recognition achieved within just five months of joining the force. This exceptional accomplishment highlights both her individual brilliance and the BSF’s growing emphasis on rewarding excellence and empowering women in uniform.

A Trailblazer from Dadri

Hailing from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, Shivani is the daughter of a carpenter and the first in her family to join any of India’s Central Armed Police Forces. Her rise from a small-town girl to a Head Constable in record time exemplifies determination and discipline. Serving in the 155 Battalion, Punjab, she has not only made her unit proud but also become an inspiration for countless young women across the nation.

The Feat That Made History

Shivani’s rapid promotion was conferred by BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary, following her stellar performance at the 17th World Wushu Championship held in Brazil from August 31 to September 8, 2025, where she clinched the silver medal. Her achievement marked a defining moment for BSF’s sports contingent and positioned her among India’s most promising martial artists.

This recognition makes Shivani only the second BSF constable in 22 years to receive such an honour. The last instance occurred in 2024 when BSF constable Anuj, from the Central Wushu Team, was promoted for winning a silver medal at the 10th Sanda World Cup in China.

DG’s Words of Encouragement

Speaking about the achievement, DG Chawdhary said that out-of-turn promotions are granted under the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for extraordinary performance in national or international championships.

“Shivani is an outstanding player of the Border Security Force. Her achievement at the World Championship has brought immense pride to the force. Such recognitions not only encourage the individual but also inspire the entire team to excel,” the DG said.

He further highlighted that BSF provides comprehensive support to its sportspersons — including proper diet, advanced training infrastructure, equipment, and access to coaches, physiotherapists, and doctors — ensuring they can perform at their best.

Shivani’s Journey and Aspirations

Speaking to ANI, Shivani shared, “I joined BSF on June 1, 2025. It’s been only five months, and today I have been promoted to Head Constable for winning the silver medal at the World Championship. I practice four hours daily — two hours in the morning and two in the evening. My next goal is to win gold at the upcoming World Cup.”

She also encouraged fellow BSF personnel, saying, “Hard work never goes unnoticed. If I can achieve this, every dedicated jawan can reach their dream.”

A Rare Honour

Out-of-turn promotion in BSF is considered a rare honour, reserved for those demonstrating “exceptional qualification” or outstanding acts of bravery or performance. Shivani’s feat — achieved in such a short span — sets a remarkable precedent for future generations of BSF athletes and women soldiers.

As DG Chawdhary presented the rank insignia, the moment symbolised more than just a promotion — it was a celebration of perseverance, excellence, and the indomitable spirit of Indian women in uniform.

A proud and defining moment for every CAPF athlete striving for glory — Constable Shivani’s achievement shines as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all.
