Indian Army Honors Late Chief General V.N. Sharma with Solemn Farewell Ceremony
The Indian Army paid a solemn tribute to General Vishwa Nath Sharma, the former Chief of the Army Staff, with a funeral conducted with full military honors in New Delhi on August 1, 2026. A respected leader within the Indian military, General Sharma's career spanned four decades, marked by a steadfast dedication to the nation.
General V.N. Sharma passed away on July 31, 2026, at the age of 96. He served as the 14th Chief of the Army Staff from 1988 to 1990. Prior to his leadership of the Indian Army, he was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command and held numerous key operational and command roles throughout his distinguished service.
The funeral was attended by many dignitaries, including General V.K. Singh (Retd.), Governor of Mizoram, former Chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the three current Service Chiefs, senior military commanders, civil dignitaries, veterans, serving personnel, and citizens nationwide, all paying their respects to the esteemed former Army Chief.
Commissioned into the 16th Light Cavalry on June 4, 1950, after graduating from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, General Sharma was the first President's Commissioned Officer to ascend to the Chief of the Army Staff position. His notable military career included participation in the Indo-Pak Wars of 1965 and 1971, counter-insurgency operations in Nagaland and Mizoram, and leadership during the Indian Peace Keeping Force operations in Sri Lanka.
He commanded the 66th Armoured Regiment, led a Mountain Brigade in counter-insurgency operations, and eventually took command of the Eastern Command before being appointed as the Army's highest-ranking officer. His term as Army Chief was distinguished by professionalism, strategic leadership, and the ongoing modernization of the force amid a critical time in India's security landscape.
General Sharma was part of a highly distinguished military family. His father, Major General Amar Nath Sharma, also served in the Indian Army, while his elder brother, Major Som Nath Sharma, was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for exceptional bravery during the 1947–48 Kashmir operations. Another brother, Lieutenant General Surindra Nath Sharma, served as the Engineer-in-Chief of the Indian Army, contributing to the family's legacy as one of India's most decorated military lineages.
After retiring in 1990, General Sharma maintained an active role in national security and strategic affairs. He served on the National Security Advisory Board, contributed to defense think tanks such as the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses and the United Service Institution of India, and was involved in various public service and charitable initiatives, including healthcare projects in Himachal Pradesh.
In recognition of his outstanding service, General Sharma was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, along with numerous campaign and long-service accolades throughout his military career.
The military honors accorded during his funeral reflected the profound respect and esteem he commanded within the Armed Forces and the country.
