Meet Major Dwipannita Kalita: The Army Doctor Who Became Assam’s First Female Paratrooper
Major Dr. Dwipannita Kalita is a medical officer in the Indian Army who made history as the first female paratrooper from the state of Assam. Serving in the elite airborne medical unit, she earned nationwide recognition for shattering conventional stereotypes regarding age, gender, and marital status in the armed forces.
Background and Early Life
Major Dwipannita Kalita was born and raised in Dhekiajuli, a small town in the Sonitpur district of Assam. She hails from a modest, humble family background. From an early age, she demonstrated exceptional determination and academic excellence. She completed her schooling at Devendra Green Grove English School in her hometown and graduated with distinction from Darrang College.
She became the first girl from her entire home district of Sonitpur to move abroad for higher education, setting a precedent that would define her trailblazing journey.
Medical Education & Civilian Career
Major Kalita pursued her MBBS degree in Manila, Philippines. Upon returning to India, she completed her medical internship at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in 2015.
She subsequently worked as a civilian doctor in New Delhi hospitals, including Deen Dayal Hospital, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the Emergency Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBG) departments. Her time in Delhi’s high-pressure medical environments honed her skills in trauma care and critical decision-making under demanding conditions.
Military Career & Paratrooper Feat
In 2019, she married Dr. Charang Mate, an officer in the Army Medical Corps. Despite societal expectations that many women in their 30s would “settle down,” Major Kalita chose a different path.
In 2020, she competed against over 100 applicants nationwide and was selected for commissioning into the Army Medical Corps (AMC) as a Captain (Medical Officer). She subverted traditional norms by entering active military service as a married woman in her 30s.
Her most defining achievement came in 2023 when, at the age of 34, she volunteered for and successfully completed the intense paratrooper and airborne training at the Army’s facility in Agra. She earned her coveted Paratrooper Badge and the elite Maroon Beret, becoming Assam’s first female paratrooper.
She was promoted to the rank of Major in January 2025. She serves in the highly specialized Parachute Medical Regiment, with strong operational associations to the Agra Army Base. Personnel in this elite unit are frequently deployed—and often directly airdropped—into active combat zones and severe natural disaster-hit areas. Her responsibilities include setting up makeshift field hospitals, managing acute trauma injuries, and performing life-saving emergency surgeries under challenging field conditions.

National Recognition
In August 2025, Major Kalita was featured on the cover of Femina India Magazine’s Independence Day special edition. Themed “In the Line of Duty,” the edition honoured ten barrier-breaking women officers who are reshaping the landscape of the Indian Army. She appeared alongside distinguished officers such as Colonel Sofia Qureshi.
Her milestone achievement received high praise from Assam’s Health and Family Welfare Minister, who publicly lauded her as a source of pride for the state and an inspiration for women across the Northeast.
Personal Interests and Philosophy
Outside her demanding deployment schedules, Major Kalita maintains balance through disciplined fitness routines in the gym, gardening, and cooking while listening to soft jazz music. She finds joy and relaxation in spending time with her pet dogs, whom she affectionately calls her personal “stressbusters.”
Her guiding philosophy is encapsulated in her powerful words: “You are not here to fit into the mould — you’re here to break out of it.”
Major Kalita’s journey—from a small town in Assam to earning the maroon beret—stands as a powerful testament to resilience, purpose, and the courage to redefine possibilities at any stage of life.
