 Lt Col Ghatage Aditya Shrikumar

Lieutenant Colonel Ghatage Aditya Shrikumar (IC-71626F) of the elite 21 Para (Special Forces) has emerged as one of the Indian Army’s most distinguished officers following his conferment of the Shaurya Chakra, the nation’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award. His leadership in a high-risk precision strike along the Indo-Myanmar border in July 2025 not only neutralised senior leadership of a notorious anti-national group but also marked the first official public acknowledgment of a previously unconfirmed covert operation.

This is the inspiring story of a mechanical engineering graduate who turned down a lucrative corporate career to pursue his childhood dream of serving in the Indian Army — and rose to lead one of the most sensitive and successful special operations in recent years.

Early Life: A Fearless Spirit from Satara-Pune

Born and raised in the Satara-Pune region of Maharashtra, Aditya Shrikumar Ghatage displayed an innate sense of courage and adventure from a very young age. His mother, Prashila Ghatage, often recounts an incident from his school days when a snake was spotted inside their home. While others recoiled, young Aditya attempted to catch it — an early glimpse of the fearlessness that would later define his military career.

His father, Shrikumar Ghatage, a retired Deputy Engineer with the Maharashtra Public Works Department, and his mother provided a grounded upbringing rooted in discipline and service. The family has spoken of the quiet pride they felt when the nation recognised their son’s gallantry. Prashila Ghatage, who once worried deeply about the dangers her son faced in Special Forces, was inspired by him to take up running and eventually became a half-marathon runner — a testament to the leadership qualities he carries even within his family.

From Engineering to the Battlefield: The Decision to Serve

After completing his degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ghatage secured a well-paying job in the IT sector in Pune. Corporate life, however, never appealed to him. The structured, desk-bound routine stood in stark contrast to the life of action and purpose he had always envisioned.

Driven by a childhood dream of wearing the olive green uniform, he resigned and began preparing for the Services Selection Board (SSB). After facing initial rejections — a common experience even among the most determined aspirants — he persevered and was finally selected for all three services: the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Without hesitation, he chose the Indian Army.

He joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, as a Technical Graduate. At IMA, he distinguished himself through exceptional performance in academics, physical training, and sports. He was adjudged first in the order of merit in his Technical Graduates course and was awarded the Silver Medal at the Passing Out Parade, reviewed by the then Governor of Punjab, General SF Rodrigues (Retd).

Joining the Elite: 21 Para (Special Forces) – The Waghnakhs

Upon commissioning, Lieutenant Ghatage made a deliberate choice that few officers make — he volunteered for the 21 Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), popularly known within the force as the “Waghnakhs” (Tiger Claws).

The 21 Para SF is one of the Indian Army’s premier special operations units, specialising in unconventional warfare, covert missions, jungle operations, cross-border actions, and high-risk reconnaissance. The unit’s ethos of operating deep in hostile terrain with minimal support aligned perfectly with Ghatage’s skills and temperament. He further specialised in jungle warfare, a capability that would prove critical in the challenging terrain of the Indo-Myanmar border region.

Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become a Lieutenant Colonel and served as a Team Commander, entrusted with planning and leading sensitive operations.

The Operation: Precision Strike Along the Indo-Myanmar Border (11–13 July 2025)

Between 11 and 13 July 2025, Lt Col Ghatage Aditya Shrikumar planned and personally led a meticulously executed precision strike against a fortified militant camp along the Indo-Myanmar border.

As Team Commander, he demonstrated outstanding operational foresight and leadership:

  • He established a robust intelligence network to gather actionable inputs.
  • He directed mission-specific training tailored to the terrain and threat.
  • He personally conducted multiple high-risk reconnaissance missions in hostile and densely vegetated terrain.
  • He enforced stringent deception measures and operational security protocols to maintain surprise.
  • He coordinated combat and support elements with precision.
  • Most importantly, he personally led the kinetic assault phase of the operation.

The outcome was decisive. The fortified camp of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) was completely destroyed. Nine armed cadres were eliminated, including senior leadership figures such as self-styled Lieutenant General Nayan Medhi (alias Nayan Asom) and other key commanders. Several others were critically injured.

This was a covert operation. At the time, the Indian Army had not publicly acknowledged any cross-border action. ULFA-I had claimed that its eastern headquarters in Myanmar’s Sagaing region had been targeted. The conferment of the Shaurya Chakra in 2026 provided the first official confirmation of the strike — a significant moment in India’s approach to dealing with transnational insurgent threats.

Shaurya Chakra: Recognition of Exemplary Leadership

On the eve of the 77th Republic Day (2026), President Smt Droupadi Murmu approved the conferment of the Shaurya Chakra on Lieutenant Colonel Ghatage Aditya Shrikumar.

Official Citation (excerpt): “Lieutenant Colonel Ghatage Aditya Shrikumar as the Team Commander displayed exemplary leadership, exceptional tactical acumen and unwavering courage during a meticulously planned and flawlessly executed precision strike on a fortified Anti-National Element camp along the Indo-Myanmar border.”

The citation specifically recognises his ability to lead from the front while ensuring the highest standards of operational planning, execution, and force protection.

The award not only honours Lt Col Ghatage’s personal gallantry but also publicly validates the effectiveness of India’s special forces in conducting precise, intelligence-driven operations against threats operating from across international borders.

His story reinforces that success in the armed forces is not merely about physical toughness but also about intellectual preparation, tactical acumen, emotional resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the nation.

Conclusion

Lieutenant Colonel Ghatage Aditya Shrikumar stands as a shining example of the quiet professionalism and exceptional courage that define India’s Special Forces. Through his leadership in the July 2025 precision strike, he not only struck a decisive blow against anti-national elements but also brought pride to his unit, the Parachute Regiment, and the entire Indian Army.

As India continues to face complex security challenges along its borders, officers like Lt Col Ghatage remind us that behind every successful operation lies years of rigorous training, personal sacrifice, and an indomitable will to protect the nation.
