Meet Lieutenant Mehak Bhati, Officer of the Regiment of Artillery to Command Suryastra MLRS Contingent at Republic Day Parade 2026
Lieutenant Mehak Bhati, an officer of the Regiment of Artillery in the Indian Army, has been appointed as the Contingent Commander of the Suryastra Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) at the 77th Republic Day Parade, scheduled to be held on January 26, 2026, at Kartavya Path. Her appointment marks a significant moment in this year’s parade, as the Suryastra system will be showcased for the first time during India’s premier ceremonial event.
Historic First for Suryastra at Republic Day Parade
The 2026 Republic Day Parade will witness the inaugural public appearance of the Suryastra MLRS, a next-generation universal rocket launcher developed under India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The system reflects the Indian Army’s growing emphasis on indigenous defence solutions and advanced long-range strike capabilities. Lieutenant Bhati’s role as contingent commander places her at the forefront of this milestone, symbolising both technological progress and the evolving leadership profile within the Army.
What Is Suryastra MLRS?
Suryastra is a universal multiple launch rocket system capable of firing rockets of multiple calibres from a single launcher platform. Mounted on an indigenously produced Tatra T815 6×6 high-mobility vehicle manufactured in India by BELM, the system offers enhanced flexibility, rapid deployment, and deep strike potential. Designed to strengthen the Artillery’s ability to engage targets deep inside hostile territory, Suryastra significantly boosts India’s long-range firepower.
A major procurement contract for the system was signed on January 3, 2026, between the Ministry of Defence and Pune-based Nibe Limited. The deal, valued at approximately USD 32.593 million (around INR 293 crore), covers an undisclosed number of launchers and marks an important step in operationalising the system within the Indian Army.
Lieutenant Mehak Bhati on Suryastra’s Capabilities
Speaking about the system ahead of the parade, Lieutenant Bhati described Suryastra as a transformational capability for the Artillery. She noted that it is a universal rocket launcher designed to be inducted into the Indian Army and highlighted its ability to fire rockets of varying calibres from a single launcher. According to her, the name “Suryastra” reflects the system’s role in striking deep into enemy territory and substantially enhancing the Army’s long-range strike capability.
Her remarks underline the operational significance of the platform and the confidence the Army places in indigenous defence technologies.
Leadership on Display at Full Dress Rehearsal
Lieutenant Bhati’s leadership qualities were also evident during the full dress rehearsal for the Republic Day Parade. Reports from rehearsals indicate that the Suryastra MLRS contingent performed with precision and discipline, drawing attention for its imposing presence and flawless coordination. As contingent commander, she led the formation through the demanding ceremonial drills that culminate on Kartavya Path, a responsibility that requires both technical understanding of the system and exemplary command skills.
Symbol of Self-Reliance and Modernisation
Lieutenant Mehak Bhati’s role at Republic Day Parade 2026 goes beyond ceremonial significance. Her command of the Suryastra MLRS contingent highlights the Indian Army’s commitment to self-reliance, innovation, and modern warfare capabilities, while also showcasing the growing contribution of young officers in leadership roles. As the nation watches the parade on January 26, the debut of Suryastra under her command will stand as a clear statement of India’s advancing indigenous defence strength and the professionalism of its armed forces.
