Meet Lance Naik B Sai Teja: 11 Para Special Forces Commando Who Made the Supreme Sacrifice at 27
In the annals of India’s armed forces, few stories capture the essence of quiet heroism and unwavering resolve as poignantly as that of Lance Naik B Sai Teja. A young soldier from the rural heartlands of Andhra Pradesh, Teja embodied the spirit of the Indian Army’s elite 11 Para (Special Forces)—rising from humble beginnings to stand guard over the nation’s highest military leadership, only to lay down his life at the tender age of 27 in one of the country’s most heartbreaking aviation tragedies.
Teja was born in 1994 into a family of farmers in the small village of Eguva Regada (Regadapalle), Kurabalakota mandal, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. His father, B Mohan, and mother, Bhuvaneswari, instilled in him and his younger brother Mahesh the values of hard work and service. Belonging to the Kuruba community, Teja displayed an early fascination with the military. He was an active participant in school cricket tournaments and trained in mixed martial arts, unarmed combat, communications, and electronic warfare. After completing his SSC locally, he graduated from institutions in Guntur and Tirupati while rigorously preparing for Army entry. Neighbours recall his daily 10-km runs to stay fit, a discipline he maintained whether in Delhi or back in the village.

In June 2013, Teja’s dream took shape when he cleared the recruitment rally in Guntur and joined the Indian Army as a sepoy in the Army Service Corps (ASC), affiliated with the Bengaluru centre. Following basic military training, he completed the Advanced Physical Training course at the Army Institute of Physical Training (AIPT) in Pune and was absorbed as a physical training instructor. Within a year, he cleared departmental exams and, driven by a deeper calling, volunteered for the elite Parachute Regiment. The selection process was unforgiving, yet Teja’s grit saw him through. In May 2019, he earned the coveted maroon beret and Balidan Badge, officially joining 11 Para (Special Forces).
Posted to one of the Army’s most prestigious units, Teja proved his mettle in demanding environments. He participated in counter-insurgency operations across Manipur, Assam, and Nagaland, earning praise for his performance. He also served in extreme high-altitude conditions in Arunachal Pradesh along the Sino-Indian border as part of Operation Snow Leopard. Peers described him as cheerful and enthusiastic, with a vibrant energy that inspired those around him. Recognising his motivation, superiors recommended him for a high-responsibility role. In August 2020, Teja was selected as Personal Security Officer (PSO) to Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat—a position that placed him at the side of India’s top military leader.

Family members later shared that they had expressed concerns about the risks of this assignment and urged him to seek a transfer, but Teja remained steadfast, viewing it as an honour. He last visited home in September 2021 for Ganesh Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chaviti), spending cherished moments with loved ones. On the fateful morning of December 8, 2021, at around 8:45 a.m., he made a video call to his wife B Shyamala and their two young children—son Mokshagna (then about 5) and daughter Darshini (then about 2–3). Hours later, the Mi-17V5 helicopter carrying CDS Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 12 others, including Teja, took off from Sulur Air Base at 11:48 a.m. The aircraft was en route to Wellington when it crashed at approximately 12:20 p.m. in a forested area near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district. Thirteen personnel lost their lives; Group Captain Varun Singh survived initially but was critically injured.
A pall of gloom descended over Eguva Regada and nearby Madanapalle as the news spread. Teja’s mortal remains were received with full military honours at Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bengaluru on December 11, 2021. The next day, a solemn send-off was held at the Command Hospital, where wreaths were laid on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, GOC-in-C Southern Command, GOC Dakshin Bharath Area, and GOC Karnataka & Kerala Sub Area. The convoy, led by Col Shekar Attri of the Parachute Regiment Training Centre, then proceeded to Chittoor.
On December 12, thousands from surrounding villages gathered in Regadapalle for the last rites. Students and locals lined the roads, holding tricolours and showering flowers as the coffin passed. Emotional scenes unfolded as his father B Mohan stood inconsolable and wife Shyamala collapsed upon seeing the coffin. The final rites were performed by his father and brother Mahesh, who carried young Mokshagna. Senior officers, local police, and ministers including Panchayat Raj Minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy paid respects. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy described Teja as the state’s “brave son” and announced ₹50 lakh ex-gratia, with a cheque handed over to the family. Actor Manchu Vishnu’s family offered free education for Teja’s children up to post-graduation.
Teja’s legacy endures through the inspiration he provides to aspiring soldiers and the pride he brought to his village, often called the “Tiger of Chittoor” by locals for his courage. His brother Mahesh continues to serve, carrying forward the family’s tradition of duty.
To capture the milestones of his remarkable yet tragically brief journey, the following timeline offers a clear overview:

In the words of those who knew him, Teja was more than a soldier—he was a son, husband, father, and brother who answered the call of duty with a smile, leaving behind a legacy that will echo through generations.

Deeply grieved for the loss of a real son of India. Earning Maroon Bernet and Balidan Badge is not a joke. It makes steel out of what we call had mans ka putla. Salute to then Andhra Government for nice monetary compensation to a deserving son and his family and salute to the Actor couple for their generosity.
