Flying Officer Minakshi Kumari

In a poignant blend of family military legacy and historic progress for women in India’s armed forces, Flying Officer Minakshi Kumari was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on 13 June 2026. A proud daughter of Subedar Major Ravinder Kumar, a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army, and sister to an Army Captain, she has etched her name in the annals of military history as one of the pioneering women from the first batch of female cadets at the National Defence Academy (NDA) to join the IAF.

Flying Officer Minakshi Kumari is one of the first history-making women fighter pilots in India to be trained through the National Defence Academy (NDA). On June 13, 2026, she officially graduated from the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Dundigal, Hyderabad, transitioning from a flight cadet to a commissioned officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Her commissioning at the Combined Graduation Parade held at the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Dundigal, Hyderabad, marks not merely a personal triumph but a powerful symbol of how determined women, supported by strong family traditions, are transforming the face of Indian defence.

Roots in a Distinguished Defence Family

Minakshi Kumari was born in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, into a household where service to the nation was a way of life. Her father, Subedar Major Ravinder Kumar, has served with distinction as a JCO in the Indian Army. Her brother proudly wears the uniform of an Army Captain. Growing up, Minakshi experienced the realities of military life firsthand as the family moved across various Army stations following her father’s postings.

This peripatetic yet disciplined upbringing instilled in her the enduring values of duty, resilience, integrity, and selfless service. The presence of her mother, father, and brother at her commissioning ceremony — with the father and brother in uniform — underscored the deep familial pride and the seamless transfer of martial tradition from one generation to the next.

Formative Years and Education

Minakshi completed her schooling at Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi. The school, situated in the heart of a military community, provided an environment where she interacted regularly with children of defence personnel and serving officers. These interactions nurtured her understanding of military ethos and strengthened her aspiration to serve the nation in uniform.

The Supreme Court Verdict and the Call of Duty

The landscape of opportunities for women in the armed forces changed irrevocably in mid-2021 when the Supreme Court delivered its historic verdict opening the prestigious National Defence Academy to women candidates. Minakshi Kumari seized this long-awaited opportunity with clarity of purpose.

She prepared rigorously, cleared the demanding NDA written examination, and successfully navigated the comprehensive Services Selection Board (SSB) process. After a nine-month period of anticipation, she received her joining letter. On 6 August 2022, she stepped into the NDA at Khadakwasla, Pune, as part of the first-ever batch of women cadets — a moment that made history.

Forged in the Crucible of NDA Training

The subsequent three years at NDA tested and transformed Minakshi in profound ways. The training regimen was relentless, encompassing academics, physical endurance, leadership exercises, and character development. She endured sweat-soaked punishment runs and grueling endurance marches, discovering within herself the ability to find joy even in exhaustion and to share laughter during the most demanding moments.

Through these shared struggles, she forged deep bonds of sisterhood with her fellow women cadets. The training sculpted her military bearing through unwavering discipline, impeccable turnout, meticulous attention to detail, and the refined art of measured communication. On 30 May 2025, dressed in gleaming white patrols, Minakshi crossed the revered ‘Antim Pag’ at the Khetarpal Parade Ground, earning the distinguished title of Ex-NDA.

Pursuit of Excellence at the Air Force Academy

Following her NDA graduation, Minakshi proceeded to the Air Force Academy in Dundigal, Hyderabad, for specialised training. Here, her world revolved around sorties and an uncompromising pursuit of perfection in aviation. The inherent challenges of flight training — its turbulence and demands — were met with focus and resilience. Her flight instructor remained a steady compass, guiding her through both successful flights that brought rare moments of peace and difficult ones that offered invaluable lessons.

Commissioning: A Family’s Pride and a Nation’s Progress

On 13 June 2026, Flying Officer Minakshi Kumari marched proudly alongside her peers, including Flying Officer Tannu, during the Combined Graduation Parade at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal. She was commissioned as a Flying Officer in the Indian Air Force, becoming one of five women from the first NDA women’s batch to join the IAF in this historic cohort.

Her family watched with immense pride and emotion as she donned the blue uniform of the Indian Air Force. The sight of Subedar Major Ravinder Kumar and his son, the Army Captain, standing in uniform beside their daughter and sister encapsulated generations of service now extending into the skies.

A Testament to Perseverance and Possibility

Flying Officer Minakshi Kumari’s journey is a powerful testament to the fact that when doors of opportunity are finally opened, women do not merely walk through them — they fly. Her story reflects unwavering commitment to excellence and serves as an inspiration for thousands of young women across India preparing for NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and SSB examinations.

As a daughter and sister from a proud military family who has now joined the Indian Air Force, she embodies the seamless continuity of service while pioneering new frontiers for women in combat and aviation roles. Her achievement reinforces the transformative impact of progressive policy decisions and highlights the exceptional calibre of India’s women officers.

Flying Officer Minakshi Kumari stands today not only as a commissioned officer of the Indian Air Force but as a beacon of what dedication, family support, and national opportunity can achieve together. Her wings, earned through years of rigorous training and quiet determination, carry forward both a personal dream and a collective aspiration for a more inclusive and stronger armed forces.
