Meet Colonel Sapna Rana: First Woman from Himachal Pradesh to Command an ASC Battalion in the Indian Army
Colonel Sapna Rana stands as a pioneering figure in the Indian Army, recognised as the first woman from Himachal Pradesh to command an Army Service Corps (ASC) battalion. Currently serving as the Commanding Officer of an ASC unit in Northeast India, her leadership role underscores the critical importance of logistics and supply chain management in sustaining operational effectiveness in challenging terrains. Her journey from a rural background to a position of command exemplifies resilience, professional excellence, and the progressive integration of women into the Indian Army’s leadership cadre.
Humble Beginnings in Himachal Pradesh
Colonel Rana hails from Himachal Pradesh and was raised in a modest environment that shaped her disciplined and determined personality. Her early years were marked by the rigours of village life, which instilled in her a profound sense of discipline, self-reliance, and perseverance that would later define her military career.
Education and Early Leadership through NCC
Colonel Rana completed her schooling at government institutions, with early education in Chandi and senior secondary studies in Solan. She earned a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree from Government PG College, Solan, and subsequently obtained an MBA in Business Management from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
During her college years, she joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC), rising to the rank of Senior Under Officer in the 1 HP Girls Battalion. She was the only NCC cadet from Himachal Pradesh selected to attend the prestigious Kargil Vijay Camp, an experience that further fuelled her interest in a career in uniform. Initially preparing for the Civil Services, she shifted her focus midway and cleared the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination after a brief coaching stint in Chandigarh. She successfully cleared the Service Selection Board (SSB) and joined the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai in 2003.
Commissioning and Steadfast Military Career
Commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps in 2004, Colonel Rana progressed through successive ranks with distinction. The ASC is responsible for the provision of supplies, transport, and logistics—functions vital to the sustenance of troops in forward and difficult operational areas. Her assignment as Commanding Officer of an ASC battalion in Northeast India marked a historic milestone: she became the first woman from Himachal Pradesh to command a battalion in the Indian Army and among the first women to lead an ASC battalion in such a challenging operational environment.
Her command responsibilities involve overseeing complex logistical operations in demanding high-altitude and remote environments, ensuring seamless supply chains that support combat readiness. This achievement reflects not only personal accomplishment but also the Indian Army’s commitment to gender-inclusive leadership roles.
Multifaceted Achievements and Professional Excellence
Colonel Rana’s record extends beyond command. During her training at OTA, she earned gold medals in cross-country events, obstacle races, and academy endurance training. She is a nationally ranked pistol and trap shooter, a member of the Indian Army Shooting Team, and has secured medals at national-level competitions. Additionally, she is a qualified microlight aircraft pilot and an accomplished marathon runner. Her personal interests include reading and gardening, pursuits that complement her rigorous professional demands.
For her exceptional devotion to duty, courage, and professional excellence, she has been awarded four Commendation Cards — two from the Chief of Army Staff and two from the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief. These recognitions affirm her consistent high standards of service.
Personal Life and Balance
Colonel Rana is married to a fellow Army officer. The couple has a daughter, and she is noted for effectively balancing the demanding responsibilities of military command with family life.
