Captain Shubham Gupta

In the annals of the Indian Army’s elite Special Forces, few stories embody courage, leadership, and selfless sacrifice as profoundly as that of Captain Shubham Gupta of 9 Para (Special Forces). On 22 November 2023, this young officer from Agra laid down his life in the dense forests of Rajouri, Jammu & Kashmir, while leading his men from the front against heavily armed terrorists. His actions ensured the success of a critical counter-terrorism operation and earned him the Sena Medal (Gallantry), conferred posthumously on Republic Day 2024.

Captain Gupta’s story is not merely one of valour on the battlefield; it is a testament to the rigorous preparation, unyielding spirit, and ultimate commitment that define India’s Parachute Special Forces.

Roots in Agra: The Making of a Dedicated Soldier

Captain Shubham Gupta was born on 7 October 1997 in the historic Taj Ganj area of Agra, Uttar Pradesh. He was the elder son of Shri Basant Kumar Gupta, who served as the District Government Counsel (Crime) in Agra, and Smt. Pushpa Devi Gupta. He had a younger brother, Rishabh Gupta. Growing up in the shadow of the Taj Mahal, young Shubham was deeply inspired by the values of discipline, courage, and service to the nation.

From an early age, he displayed qualities of leadership and a strong sense of responsibility. His fascination with the Armed Forces transformed into a firm resolve to wear the olive green uniform. He completed his schooling at St. George’s Inter College, Agra, where his academic excellence and character stood out.

The Path to Commissioning and the Elite Special Forces

In 2015, at the age of 18, Captain Gupta cleared the competitive Technical Entry Scheme (TES) examination and joined the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA), Gaya. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 2018. Like many officers who aspire to the highest standards of combat, he volunteered for the gruelling Special Forces selection process.

The probation and specialized training for Para SF are among the most demanding in the Indian Army, testing physical endurance, mental resilience, tactical acumen, and leadership under extreme conditions. Captain Gupta successfully completed this rigorous selection and earned his place in the 9 Para (Special Forces) — one of the most battle-hardened and respected units of the Parachute Regiment.

The 9 Para (SF), raised in 1966, specializes in mountain warfare, counter-insurgency, and counter-terrorism operations. Its personnel operate in some of the most challenging terrains and high-threat environments, upholding the unit’s proud traditions of excellence and selflessness.

Deployment in Jammu & Kashmir: Serving on the Frontlines

Following his induction into 9 Para (SF), Captain Gupta was posted to Jammu & Kashmir, where he served as part of the Romeo Force under the operational control of the XVI Corps. The region, particularly the Rajouri-Poonch sector, has long been a hotspot for Pakistan-sponsored terrorist activities. Captain Gupta and his fellow commandos conducted high-risk operations aimed at neutralizing terrorist threats and restoring peace for local populations.

His service reflected the quiet professionalism and readiness that characterize Special Forces personnel — always prepared, always leading from the front.

The Supreme Sacrifice: The Rajouri Encounter of 22 November 2023

In mid-November 2023, credible intelligence indicated the presence of heavily armed Pakistani terrorists, including high-value Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives, hiding in “dhoks” (temporary shelters) deep within the dense, steep, and forested terrain of the Kalakote / Gulabgarh forest area in Rajouri district.

A joint cordon-and-search operation was launched involving elements of 9 Para (SF), 63 Rashtriya Rifles, and Jammu & Kashmir Police. The operation unfolded over several days in extremely challenging conditions, with terrorists occupying dominating heights and using natural cover such as boulders and sangars.

The sequence of events on 22 November 2023 highlighted extraordinary bravery:

  • Captain M.V. Pranjal of 63 RR was the first to be critically wounded while gathering information from a local resident.
  • Major D.S. Mehra of 9 Para attempted a daring rescue, drew heavy fire, and sustained injuries (he was later evacuated and recovered).
  • Captain Shubham Gupta, along with Havildar Abdul Majid and Lance Naik Sanjay Bisht — all from 9 Para (SF) — immediately moved forward to support the rescue effort and tactically engage the terrorists.

Despite the intense firefight, Captain Gupta displayed remarkable courage and leadership. He moved out of cover to engage the enemy directly, inspiring his men and pinning down terrorist positions. Even after sustaining multiple bullet wounds and grievous injuries, he continued directing his team and fighting until he was evacuated. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

In the same operation, Paratrooper Sachin Laur also made the supreme sacrifice. In total, five brave soldiers laid down their lives. The operation, however, achieved its objective: two Pakistani LeT terrorists were neutralized, including a high-value commander and sniper/explosives expert suspected of masterminding previous attacks that had claimed civilian lives. An attempt by Pakistan to resupply the terrorists via drone was foiled, with arms and ammunition recovered.

Captain Gupta’s actions — leading from the front under heavy fire, refusing to yield despite mortal wounds, and ensuring the mission’s success — exemplified the highest traditions of the Indian Army and the elite ethos of the Special Forces.

Posthumous Honour: Sena Medal for Gallantry

In recognition of his extraordinary courage, indomitable spirit, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice, Captain Shubham Gupta was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry) on Republic Day, 26 January 2024. The official gallantry awards list confirmed the honour for Service No. IC-84541K, Captain Shubham Gupta, 9 Para (SF).

This prestigious award stands as a lasting testament to his selfless service and the ultimate price he paid for the nation’s security.

A Legacy of Valour and Inspiration

Captain Shubham Gupta was only 26 years old at the time of his martyrdom. His sacrifice has left an indelible mark on his unit, the Indian Army, and the nation. He is remembered across defence circles, social media tributes, and memorial content as the “Fearless” officer and the “Lion of 9 Para SF.”

His story continues to inspire thousands of defence aspirants preparing for NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and SSB interviews. It underscores the harsh realities faced by Special Forces personnel who operate in the shadows to keep the nation safe, and the profound cost of freedom.

His family in Agra — parents and younger brother — carry both the unbearable pain of loss and the quiet pride of a son and brother who lived and died upholding the highest ideals of service to the nation. Plans for his future, including his marriage, were tragically cut short, yet his legacy endures far beyond his years.

Conclusion: Remembering the Brave

Captain Shubham Gupta’s life and sacrifice remind us that the security we often take for granted is secured by young men and women who voluntarily choose the most demanding paths and make the ultimate sacrifice when duty calls.

His actions in the forests of Rajouri on that fateful day in November 2023 — moving forward when others needed support, fighting on despite grievous wounds, and placing mission and comrades above self — will forever be etched in the proud history of 9 Para (SF) and the Indian Army.

As the nation continues to honour its gallantry awardees and fallen heroes, Captain Shubham Gupta stands tall among those who lived by the credo that freedom is not free.
