Meet Captain Shilpy Gargmukh: The First Female Officer in the Territorial Army

Captain Shilpy Gargmukh represents a landmark achievement in the Indian armed forces, becoming the inaugural female officer inducted into the Territorial Army (TA) in 2016. Originating from Katihar in Bihar, Capt. Gargmukh exhibited exceptional academic performance early on. She achieved top rankings in her Class 10 examinations at Navodaya Vidyalaya and excelled in her intermediate studies at Delhi Public School, Bokaro. She further pursued a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology, Sindri, Dhanbad. In addition to her scholarly accomplishments, she participated actively in extracurriculars, representing her school at the national level in basketball on two occasions and receiving training in classical music.

Her familial environment significantly influenced her path. With siblings serving in the armed forces—one as a fighter pilot and another as a Major in the Indian Army—Capt. Gargmukh was raised in an atmosphere emphasizing discipline and national service. This upbringing cultivated her enduring respect for military attire and a commitment to safeguarding the nation.

Upon completing her education, Capt. Gargmukh initially joined Tata Consultancy Services in Hyderabad. Finding the role in programming and testing mismatched with her interests, she shifted focus to preparing for examinations in government and public sector entities. Although she encountered setbacks with organizations such as the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation, and Steel Authority of India Limited, her determination led her to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), attracted by its conducive work environment and growth prospects.

She presently serves as an Assistant Executive Engineer in Production at ONGC's Ankleshwar unit in Gujarat, effectively managing her engineering responsibilities alongside her obligations in the Territorial Army.

The Territorial Army functions as a voluntary, part-time arm of the Indian Army, enabling employed individuals to support national needs during crises. In 2016, the government's initiative to include women in TA recruitment, specifically for railway engineer units, provided Capt. Gargmukh with a pivotal opportunity. She navigated the demanding selection procedure, encompassing written tests, interviews, and medical assessments.

Commissioned as a Lieutenant on October 5, 2016, during a formal ceremony at ONGC's Jeevan Bharti Building in Delhi, the event was overseen by ONGC Chairman D.K. Sarraf and Major General Sanjay Soi, attended by high-ranking officials. This event established her as the first female TA officer, setting a precedent for subsequent inductees like Supriya Choudhary from Rajasthan.

Officer training in the TA involves an initial month of basic instruction, followed by annual two-month camps and a three-month post-commissioning program at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun within the first two years. Capt. Gargmukh has advanced to the rank of Captain, skillfully integrating her military and professional commitments.

Capt. Gargmukh's groundbreaking position has garnered widespread acclaim as an emblem of female empowerment. As noted by DC Srivastava, Executive Director and Chief Security at ONGC, her accomplishment brings considerable prestige and inspires other female colleagues to consider TA service.
