Meet Captain Lalrinawma Sailo: 4 PARA SF Officer Who Became Mizoram’s First Commissioned Officer to Earn the Kirti Chakra
In the quiet hills of Chanmari Veng in Aizawl, Mizoram, a young boy once dreamed of serving the nation in its most elite fighting units. Today, that dream has crystallised into national recognition. Captain Lalrinawma Sailo of 4 PARA (Special Forces) has etched his name in history as the first commissioned Mizo officer to be awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry honour.
On 8 June 2026, President Smt. Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Kirti Chakra upon Captain Sailo at Rashtrapati Bhavan during the Defence Investiture Ceremony. The award recognises his exceptional courage, tactical brilliance, and selfless devotion to duty during high-risk counter-terrorism operations in Jammu & Kashmir.
Early Life and Education: The Making of a Special Forces Officer
Born in March 1999 in Chanmari Veng, Aizawl, Captain Lalrinawma Sailo grew up in a family deeply rooted in Mizoram’s values of discipline and service. He is the youngest of three siblings and the son of Shri Saihmingliana Sailo.
From an early age, he displayed the determination required for a military career. He joined the prestigious Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) in Dehradun, an institution known for shaping future military leaders. He then entered the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 2018, continuing his rigorous training. Captain Sailo was commissioned into the Indian Army from the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in 2021.
His journey reflects the classic path of many distinguished Indian Army officers — RIMC to NDA to IMA — but it was his subsequent selection into the elite 4 PARA (Special Forces) that set him apart for the most demanding missions.
Military Career: Serving with 4 PARA (Special Forces)
Captain Sailo serves as an officer in 4 PARA (Special Forces), one of the Indian Army’s premier special operations units. Special Forces personnel undergo some of the most grueling selection processes in the world, and his presence in the unit speaks volumes about his physical endurance, mental resilience, and operational acumen.
As an Assault Team Commander, he has been at the forefront of counter-terrorism operations in the challenging terrain of Jammu & Kashmir.
Operation Sindoor: The Action That Earned the Kirti Chakra
The Kirti Chakra was awarded for Captain Sailo’s conspicuous gallantry during Operation Sindoor, a significant counter-terrorism campaign. While detailed operational specifics remain classified for security reasons, credible reports and official descriptions paint a clear picture of his bravery:
- Serving as Assault Team Commander, Captain Sailo led his team in penetrating a fortified terrorist base in Jammu & Kashmir.
- The mission was part of efforts to avenge a prior terror strike in Pahalgam.
- In a fierce close-quarter battle lasting approximately 58 seconds, his team neutralised top terrorist leadership and their associates under his battlefield leadership.
- He demonstrated exceptional intelligence skills by positively identifying and neutralising a high-profile terrorist.
- He subsequently engaged and eliminated the remaining terrorists at close range with outstanding courage.
- Earlier in the operations, his team destroyed a terrorist camp inside Pakistan using drones while operating in their sector.
- He had also previously played a key role in dismantling a terror network inside Kashmir.
These actions exemplify the warrior ethos, precision, and devotion to duty that define India’s Special Forces.
Official Recognition: From Announcement to Investiture
The gallantry award was officially approved by President Droupadi Murmu on the eve of Independence Day 2025. Captain Sailo of 4 PARA (Special Forces) was one of only four recipients of the Kirti Chakra in the 2025 Independence Day gallantry awards list, as confirmed by the Press Information Bureau.
The formal investiture took place on 8 June 2026 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Murmu personally presented the award and publicly lauded Captain Sailo’s “dauntless courage and devotion to duty.”
With this honour, Captain Sailo became:
- The first commissioned Mizo officer to receive the Kirti Chakra.
- Only the second Mizo recipient overall, following Subedar Chalhnuna Lushai of the Assam Rifles, who was awarded the honour in 1968.

State Honours and Widespread Congratulations
The Government of Mizoram announced a cash award of ₹10 lakh in recognition of Captain Sailo’s achievement. Warm congratulations poured in from across the state and the nation, including from:
- Governor of Mizoram, Gen (Retd) Vijay Kumar Singh
- Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma
- Other senior leaders and the people of Mizoram
His father, Shri Saihmingliana Sailo, expressed immense pride while noting that his son remained committed to duty in the forward areas.

A Symbol of Inspiration for the Northeast and Defence Aspirants
Captain Lalrinawma Sailo’s achievement carries profound significance beyond the medal itself. It highlights the growing representation of talented youth from Mizoram and the Northeast in India’s elite Special Forces units. His story serves as a powerful inspiration for thousands of defence aspirants preparing for NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and SSB interviews — proving that determination, rigorous preparation, and courage can overcome all barriers.
In an era where Special Forces operations demand not just physical bravery but also exceptional intelligence, tactical acumen, and leadership under extreme pressure, Captain Sailo has set a shining example.
Conclusion: A Legacy in the Making
Captain Lalrinawma Sailo stands today as a proud son of Mizoram and a decorated warrior of the Indian Army. From the serene hills of Aizawl to the high-stakes battlefields of Jammu & Kashmir, his journey embodies the finest traditions of the Indian Armed Forces — service before self, courage in adversity, and excellence in the most demanding conditions.
As India continues to face complex security challenges, officers like Captain Sailo remind us why the nation places its trust in its Special Forces. His Kirti Chakra is not merely a personal honour — it is a collective source of pride for Mizoram, the Northeast, and every Indian who believes in the ideals of courage, integrity, and selfless service.
