Meet Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik: Cobra Commando Injured in IED Blast During Anti-Naxal Operation
In a major development during ongoing anti-Naxal operations in Jharkhand, Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast on March 1, 2026. The incident occurred during a high-intensity search and cordon operation in the dense Saranda forest region of West Singhbhum district, one of the long-standing strongholds of CPI-Maoist insurgents.
The operation was being carried out jointly by the CRPF’s elite 209 CoBRA Battalion (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) and personnel from the Jharkhand Police. Acting on specific intelligence inputs about the movement and presence of armed Naxal cadres in the Saranda hills, security forces launched a coordinated sweep of the heavily forested terrain. During the search, a pressure-activated IED, suspected to have been planted by Maoist insurgents, detonated, injuring Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik and at least two other personnel.

Following the explosion, an exchange of fire reportedly took place between security forces and the Naxalites. During the encounter, one more security personnel sustained injuries. While some unverified reports have suggested that a few Maoist cadres may have been neutralized in the firefight, official confirmation regarding insurgent casualties remains awaited as of March 2, 2026.
Immediately after the blast, Assistant Commandant Malik was administered first aid on site. Given the challenging terrain and the seriousness of the situation, he was airlifted—reportedly using a Border Security Force helicopter—to the Ranchi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for advanced medical treatment. Subsequent updates indicate that he may be shifted to a specialized medical facility in Delhi for further care, if required.
An official statement from the CRPF’s 209 CoBRA Battalion on March 2, 2026, acknowledged the bravery displayed during the operation. The statement noted that Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik and Commando Vikram Yadav exhibited indomitable courage and unwavering commitment despite sustaining injuries in the IED blast and during the exchange of fire. It further clarified that both personnel are safe and stable, countering initial media reports that had described Malik’s condition as critical.

Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik is known as a seasoned and battle-hardened officer within the force. A 2010-batch UPSC officer who joined the CRPF in 2013, he has served in high-risk operational theatres including Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, and Jharkhand. Over the years, he has earned multiple gallantry commendations for his leadership in counter-insurgency operations, including actions against senior Naxal commanders in Jharkhand. He has also been nominated for the Prime Minister’s Police Medal for life-saving actions during a bus rescue operation in Jammu. Notably, his wife also serves as an Assistant Commandant in the CRPF, reflecting the family’s deep commitment to national service.
The Saranda forests have long remained a challenging operational zone in India’s fight against Left-Wing Extremism. The difficult terrain, combined with frequent use of IEDs, booby traps, and guerrilla warfare tactics by CPI-Maoist cadres, makes operations in this area particularly hazardous. The latest incident comes amid intensified anti-Naxal drives across Jharkhand and neighboring states in early 2026, as security forces aim to dismantle remaining insurgent infrastructure and strongholds.
The incident has also reignited discussions about enhancing technological support for elite units like CoBRA, including wider deployment of advanced IED detection systems, drones, jammers, and ground-penetrating radar to minimize risks to personnel during operations in dense forested areas.
As of March 2, 2026, prayers and messages of solidarity continue to pour in for Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik. Colleagues, citizens, and well-wishers have lauded his courage and dedication, once again highlighting the sacrifices made daily by India’s security forces in high-threat environments to ensure peace and stability.
