Mazagon Dock and TKMS Engage in Project 75(I) Submarine Contract Negotiations

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has officially initiated contract discussions with Indian defense procurement authorities for Project 75(I). This significant program aims to build six next-generation conventional submarines in partnership with Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).

The initiative, valued at ₹43,000 crore, is a crucial component of the Indian Navy’s fleet modernization efforts and is expected to significantly advance the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India missions. As part of the plan, six state-of-the-art submarines, designed by Germany, will be constructed at MDL in Mumbai, utilizing technology transfer and fostering local capacity building.

Describing the collaboration as "a foundation for trust, innovation and shared goals," TKMS CEO Oliver Burkhard emphasized India's potential to become a global center for submarine technology and production. He stated that with the support of both governments, India can produce world-class submarines for its navy and friendly nations worldwide.

Officials highlighted that the project will boost India's naval power, create jobs, improve shipbuilding skills, and expand industrial opportunities in the defense sector. Equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems from TKMS, the submarines are anticipated to provide enhanced endurance and advanced operational capabilities.

For Germany, this deal affirms its position as a reliable partner in defense technology and indicates a strengthening of strategic and industrial relations with India. For New Delhi, Project 75(I) represents a significant move towards reducing reliance on foreign platforms while enhancing regional maritime security.
