Major General Sanjay Maurya Assumes Commandant Position at Kolkata's Command Hospital

In an important development for the Indian Army's Eastern Command, Lt Gen RC Tiwari, who serves as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, extended his congratulations to Maj Gen Sanjay Maurya as he took on the esteemed role of Commandant at Command Hospital, Kolkata today.

This ceremonial transition signifies a new chapter for the hospital, which is a key tertiary care and teaching institution with a history that dates back to 1870. Maj Gen Maurya, an alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, brings with him a wealth of expertise in the fields of plastic and reconstructive surgery as he assumes his new duties.

Maj Gen Maurya's academic and clinical contributions, notably including a 2019 study on the management of war wounds, underscore his expertise in handling complex injuries. The study focused on the difficulties posed by delayed reconstruction due to the initial prioritization of vital organ injuries, a crucial element for improving outcomes for military personnel.

The Command Hospital, situated in Alipore, has evolved from a modest 60-bed British medical facility established near the Racecourse to its current form since 1968. It functions as an essential referral center, particularly for soldiers in need of advanced reconstructive care following trauma. Lt Gen Tiwari, who has been leading the Eastern Command since 2023, emphasized the significance of Maurya's appointment in bolstering the hospital's capabilities.

The event, highlighted by a formal exchange of insignia, represents the Indian Army's dedication to upholding high standards of medical care within its ranks, particularly under challenging wartime conditions. Under Maj Gen Maurya’s leadership, the hospital's role in providing specialized treatment and training is expected to be further strengthened.
