Major General RD Sharma Assumes Leadership of Bison Division in Indian Army

Major General RD Sharma has assumed the role of General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Indian Army's Bison Division, signifying a significant leadership change within Southern Command. This transition was marked by a formal ceremony earlier today, where Maj Gen Sharma succeeded Major General Akhilesh Kumar, SM, becoming the 38th officer to helm this esteemed unit.
The Bison Division is notable in India's military history, having originated from the Nizam’s Hyderabad Contingent. It became part of the Indian Army after Hyderabad's annexation in 1948. Throughout the years, the division has been instrumental in several key operations, including the 1961 liberation of Goa and missions related to the integration of princely states.
During his address to the troops at the ceremony, Maj Gen Sharma emphasized the need for all ranks to maintain the highest standards of discipline, training, and combat readiness. He highlighted the importance of agility and a focus on mission goals as the Indian Army advances its capabilities by incorporating technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing, as detailed in the Army’s 2024 technology absorption roadmap.
Operating under the Southern Command, the Bison Division has been a pivotal part of India's strategic military framework since the command's inception in 1895. Currently led by Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, Southern Command has been central to significant post-independence military actions, including the accession of Junagadh and Hyderabad.
Maj Gen Sharma’s new role is viewed as a continuation of the division's distinguished history. His leadership is anticipated to steer the Bison Division through emerging security challenges while preserving its critical role in the Indian Army's southern theatre.
