Major Anshul Baltoo Honored with Shaurya Chakra for Courageous Counter-Insurgency Operation in Assam
Major Anshul Baltoo of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry and the 32 Assam Rifles has been recognized with the Shaurya Chakra, India's third-highest peacetime gallantry award. This prestigious honor is a testament to his outstanding bravery, leadership, and unwavering dedication during a counter-insurgency mission in Assam.
The accolade was presented by President Droupadi Murmu during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
On April 29, 2025, with reliable intelligence about armed militants, Major Baltoo spearheaded a high-risk operation involving a cordon, combing, and search maneuver in the difficult terrain of Assam's Dima Hasao district. In the initial stages, his team faced heavy and sustained gunfire from well-armed militants who tried to escape into the dense jungle.
Despite adverse weather, challenging terrain, and the persistent threat from hostile forces, Major Baltoo showed remarkable resolve and tactical skill. He prevented the militants from regrouping or fleeing by maintaining relentless pressure, conducting an exhaustive day-long search while keeping his troops motivated and prepared under strenuous conditions.
During the mission, Major Baltoo encountered an armed militant attempting to retrieve a weapon and reposition for an attack. In a display of exceptional bravery and quick thinking, he faced the imminent threat head-on. Disregarding his safety, he engaged the militant in close quarters, successfully neutralizing the threat to his troops.
The operation proved successful for the security forces, resulting in the neutralization of three armed militants and the recovery of significant weaponry, including three AK-47 rifles, two 9mm pistols, and additional military equipment. This accomplishment dealt a major blow to the local militant network.
