Lt Gen PS Shekhawat Reviews Indian Army Agniveer Recruitment Rally in Sikar, Rajasthan

Sikar, Rajasthan, October 9, 2026: Lieutenant General PS Shekhawat, Chief of Staff of the Indian Army’s Sapta Shakti Command, visited the Agniveer Recruitment Rally in Sikar on October 8 to review how the recruitment process was being conducted and to assess the arrangements in place for candidates seeking to join the Indian Army under the Agnipath scheme.

During the visit, Lt Gen Shekhawat inspected the different stages of the rally, including physical fitness tests, medical screening, recruitment procedures and the supporting administrative setup. The review was aimed at ensuring that the selection process remained efficient, transparent and in line with the standards prescribed by the Army.

He also interacted with recruitment officials, staff and representatives from civil academia to understand the preparations made for the rally and the practical challenges involved in conducting a large-scale recruitment exercise. In his interactions, the senior officer stressed the importance of fairness, transparency and efficiency in identifying suitable candidates for service in the Indian Army.

The Agniveer recruitment rally offers eligible young candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their physical fitness, medical suitability and overall preparedness for military service. The selection process involves multiple stages designed to assess applicants against the standards laid down by the Indian Army.

While speaking with recruiting personnel, Lt Gen Shekhawat highlighted the responsibility of ensuring that deserving candidates are given equal opportunity throughout the recruitment process. He also underlined the need for effective coordination among recruitment authorities and supporting agencies to maintain the integrity and smooth functioning of the rally.

Sapta Shakti Command, also known as the Indian Army’s South Western Command, is headquartered in Jaipur and has responsibility for military operations and preparedness in its area of jurisdiction. The command also supports military training, administrative and recruitment-related activities.

The Agnipath scheme, introduced in 2022, allows young Indians to serve as Agniveers for four years. Under the scheme, up to 25 per cent of each batch may be selected for regular service, depending on organisational requirements and prescribed selection criteria.

Recruitment rallies remain a key mechanism for the Army to identify physically fit, disciplined and motivated young people capable of meeting the demands of military service. They also require close coordination between military recruitment authorities, local administration and other supporting organisations.

The visit by Lt Gen PS Shekhawat to the Sikar rally reflected the Army’s focus on maintaining high recruitment standards while ensuring that the selection process remains fair and transparent for all eligible candidates.

It also reinforced the service’s stated commitment to offering young people an opportunity to serve the nation while selecting only those who meet the physical, medical and professional requirements of military service.
