CBI Arrests CGST Inspector, Three Others in Multi-State IBPS Exam Impersonation Racket
CBI Special Task Branch officers in Mumbai have carried out coordinated raids across Delhi, Bihar, Haryana and West Bengal after registering a case on the basis of a complaint filed by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), in what the agency describes as a crackdown on a habitual impersonation racket linked to public recruitment examinations.
According to a press release dated October 8, 2026, the Central Bureau of Investigation said four accused had fraudulently entered multiple stages of the selection process, including written examinations and interviews, by physically posing as candidates. The agency said the arrests represented a breakthrough in exposing a network that compromised the integrity of public examinations and denied genuine aspirants their chances.
Among those arrested is a CGST inspector. The CBI has not disclosed the names of the accused, the particular examinations they targeted, or the legal provisions under which they have been booked. It has also not said how the impersonators managed to get past identity verification at examination and interview venues.
IBPS is an autonomous organisation that conducts common recruitment examinations for participating public sector banks and other financial institutions. Its tests include those for probationary officers, clerks and specialist officers. The complaint that triggered the FIR was filed by IBPS itself.
The CBI said the investigation is ongoing and is aimed at identifying others involved in the racket and establishing their roles. The agency has not yet made public further details on the extent of the impersonation, the candidates for whom the accused allegedly appeared, or whether results linked to the compromised examinations have already been declared.
