Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth Highlights Technological and Social Initiatives at Artillery Centre Hyderabad

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, who commands the Southern Command, recently visited the Artillery Centre in Hyderabad. This event marked a pivotal moment in the Indian Army's transformation efforts, highlighting the incorporation of advanced technology, such as virtual reality (VR) training, into a comprehensive 31-week program for Agniveers. These Agniveers are short-term recruits enlisted under the Agnipath Scheme, which was introduced in 2022.

According to the Ministry of Defence, only 25% of these Agniveers are expected to secure permanent positions, contingent upon their performance. This statistic underscores the selective nature of the scheme, aiming to cultivate a force prepared for future demands.

During his visit, Lt Gen Seth was briefed on the significant training initiatives and upgrades in infrastructure meant to deliver well-rounded military training. He praised the Centre for upholding high standards and utilizing technology to ready troops for modern warfare. The Army Commander highlighted the importance of the Centre in establishing a foundation built on discipline, military competence, and a resilient ethos, which are crucial for developing a forward-looking military force.

A key aspect of the visit was Lt Gen Seth’s engagement with prominent athletes, including Arjuna awardee Sub Satish Joshi and Dhyanchand awardee Sub Manjeet Singh, who are part of the Indian Army Watermanship Training Node, along with members of the Services Handball Team at the Indian Army Handball Node. This interaction highlights the Army's commitment to excellence both in combat and sports. Research from the Journal of Military and Strategic Studies (2023) indicates that physical training from such nodes can enhance cognitive resilience, potentially improving the effectiveness of troops.

Lt Gen Seth also visited Matruchaya, a boarding facility catering to Divyangans (persons with disabilities), where he acknowledged the dedication of the Special Educators and Care-givers. This initiative is in line with Maharashtra's 2022 policy aimed at supporting its 29.6 lakh disabled population, showcasing an often-overlooked aspect of the Southern Command’s welfare initiatives. Such programs underscore the Army’s comprehensive approach, extending their impact beyond military training to broader societal contributions.
