Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta Exemplifies Leadership with Hands-On High-Altitude Drill in the Himalayas

Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, who holds several prestigious military decorations, is currently leading the Indian Army's Central Command as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief. Demonstrating his robust leadership and physical stamina, he recently executed a helicopter slithering maneuver during a challenging high-altitude exercise near the Himalayan border. This action underscores his commitment to confronting frontline challenges and his belief that senior military leaders should inspire their troops through active participation, particularly in areas with harsh environmental and tactical conditions.

An alumnus of premier military institutions like the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Lt Gen Sengupta has also perfected his strategic skills at institutions including the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and the National Defence College.

Commissioned into the 14th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment in June 1987, Lt Gen Sengupta has enjoyed a distinguished 36-year career. His service includes critical roles in counter-insurgency operations in regions such as Manipur, Nagaland, Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Siachen Glacier, and Eastern Ladakh. His command of the Leh-based Fire and Fury Corps earned him the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal in 2023. In March 2023, he became the Chief of Staff of the Northern Command before assuming leadership of the Central Command in July 2024.

Throughout his career, Lt Gen Sengupta has held various command and staff positions. These include instructing at the National Defence Academy, serving as directing staff at DSSC Wellington, commanding a brigade in UN missions in Congo, and undertaking strategic duties at Army Headquarters. His leadership excellence has been recognized with numerous awards, such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2025, along with other honors like the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Yudh Seva Medal.

Lt Gen Sengupta is well-regarded for his proactive approach, as evidenced by his direct involvement in high-risk drills in the Himalayas, aimed at enhancing troop morale and readiness in challenging environments.
