Lt Gen Amit Rao Takes Over as Commandant of Army Air Defence College, Gopalpur
Lieutenant General Amit Rao has taken over as Commandant of the Army Air Defence College (AADC), Gopalpur, bringing to the post a background of operational, command and staff experience from one of the Indian Army’s major field formations. His appointment places him at the helm of the Army’s premier training institution for air defence personnel, at a time when the service is placing sustained emphasis on specialised instruction and capability development.
Before assuming charge at the AADC, Lt Gen Rao served as Major General and Chief of Staff of Trishakti Corps. His experience in an operational formation is expected to support the college’s training and professional development role, particularly as the Army continues to adapt its air defence preparation to changing battlefield requirements.
The occasion was marked by greetings from Lt Gen Sukriti Singh Dahiya, SM, VSM, the Officiating General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army Training Command (ARTRAC). She congratulated Lt Gen Rao on taking over the appointment and extended best wishes for his tenure at the college.
Lt Gen Dahiya, who also serves as Chief of Staff, Headquarters ARTRAC, and Colonel Commandant of the Bengal Sappers and Military Survey, conveyed her wishes to the newly appointed Commandant in her additional capacity as a senior leader associated with the Army’s training establishment.
The Army Air Defence College at Gopalpur is responsible for imparting specialised training to personnel of the Army Air Defence. Its role extends beyond basic instruction to the development of technical proficiency, tactical understanding, leadership qualities and the professional expertise needed to sustain operational readiness.
The change in leadership comes as the Indian Army continues to strengthen its air defence capabilities in response to the rapidly evolving character of aerial threats. The growing use of unmanned aerial systems, precision weapons and other emerging technologies has increased the importance of specialised training, technological adaptation and regular refinement of operational practice.
Against this backdrop, Lt Gen Rao’s appointment is expected to keep the college focused on professional excellence and capability development, with an emphasis on preparing personnel for the demands of a more technology-driven battlefield.
The transition at the AADC also reflected ARTRAC’s continuing focus on military education, training and professional development as essential elements of operational readiness and future battlefield preparedness.
