Lieutenant Sai Jadhav Makes History as First Woman Officer Cadet to Complete Training at Indian Military Academy
The Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun marked a significant milestone in its long-standing history as Sai Jadhav became the first female officer cadet to complete training at the esteemed institution and subsequently join the Indian Army.
Originating from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, Sai Jadhav was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Territorial Army (TA) after finishing an intensive six-month specialized training course at IMA. This commissioning represents a pivotal step forward in promoting gender inclusion within the Indian Army’s officer training programs.

Sai Jadhav holds the distinction of being the first female officer cadet to train at IMA. Among the 16 officer cadets from the Territorial Army, she stood out as the sole woman.
Although she did not take part in the main Passing Out Parade march-past with Regular Army cadets, she successfully completed the demanding military training modules set under the Territorial Army’s special course at IMA.
At the commissioning event, Sai’s parents had the honor of pinning the rank stars on her shoulders, marking a deeply personal and symbolic occasion. Her achievement is deeply rooted in a family with a strong military background:
| Her father, Major Sandeep Jadhav, is a current officer in the Territorial Army |
| Her grandfather served in the British Army |
This rich family tradition of military service significantly influenced her decision to pursue a career in the armed forces.

Sai Jadhav succeeded in passing the national-level competitive examination and the SSB Interview, leading to her enrollment at IMA six months ago. Reflecting on her experience, she described the training as both physically and mentally challenging but ultimately transformative.
She noted that her time at the academy significantly boosted her leadership abilities and endurance, while also instilling confidence and a profound sense of duty as an officer in the Indian Army.
An important announcement during the event revealed that starting from June 2026, female officer cadets will partake in regular training at IMA alongside their male peers and participate in the Passing Out Parade, marking another noteworthy advancement in the academy’s history.
This initiative will further solidify gender integration in officer training and promote equal opportunities within the armed forces.
Sai Jadhav encouraged young women in schools and colleges to consider careers in the Armed Forces, emphasizing that it offers not only professional growth but also the utmost honor of serving the nation.
Her journey serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring young women looking to join the Indian Army, demonstrating that determination, discipline, and courage can overcome long-standing barriers.
