Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair Retires After Trailblazing 39-Year Career in Indian Army

After a distinguished 39-year tenure with the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair has retired from her groundbreaking role as Director General Medical Services (Army). Her departure was commemorated with a ceremonial farewell at the Army Medical Corps Centre and College in Lucknow, attended by senior officers, including Lieutenant General Shivinder Singh, and other corps members.
Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair, who joined the Indian Army in December 1985, became a prominent figure in the military medical services. She made history on August 1, 2024, by becoming the first woman to be appointed as Director General Medical Services (Army). Before assuming this role, she was also the first woman to serve as Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces) at the rank of Air Marshal, showcasing her leadership across the armed forces' medical sector.

During a Special Sainik Sammelan in Lucknow, Lt Gen Nair addressed attendees, emphasizing the necessity of upholding the highest standards of medical care and professionalism within the Army Medical Corps. Her tenure as Senior Colonel Commandant of the corps was noted for significant advancements in healthcare services for military personnel.
Her remarkable contributions were recognized with prestigious awards, including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2025 and the Vishisht Seva Medal earlier in her career, underscoring her commitment and influence. Her career serves as an inspiration, especially for women in the armed forces, breaking barriers and establishing a legacy of excellence.
The Indian Army and the Army Medical Corps extended their gratitude for her exceptional contributions, wishing her success in her future endeavors. Lt Gen CG Muralidharan has taken over the role of Director General of Medical Services (Army), succeeding Lt Gen Sadhna S Nair, AVSM, VSM, who retired on September 30, 2025, after a commendable career dedicated to serving the nation.
