Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma Oversees Extended Counter-Terrorism Efforts in South Kashmir's Kulgam Forest

Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command, has undertaken a significant review of the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in South Kashmir. His visit coincides with a major anti-terror mission in the dense Akhal forest area of Kulgam district, which has now entered its seventh day. This operation is noted as one of the most extended engagements in the region in recent times.

The operation, a coordinated effort by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was initiated based on specific intelligence about terrorist activity in the area. The forces have faced substantial resistance, with reports of continuous gunfire and explosions. Given the challenging terrain and the suspected size of the militant group, officials anticipate that the operation might continue for some time.

During his visit to Devsar in Kulgam, Lieutenant General Sharma received a detailed briefing on the current situation, including operational deployments and real-time tactical updates. He commended the forces for their discipline, bravery, and commitment despite challenging conditions.

This encounter underscores the evolving tactics of the Indian Army, particularly during the summer when melting snow along the Line of Control typically leads to increased infiltration attempts. The rugged and forested terrain of the Akhal forest has posed additional challenges, requiring high levels of coordination and endurance from the joint forces.

The Northern Command, responsible for overseeing India's borders with Pakistan and China since 1972, remains crucial in ensuring regional security. Under Lieutenant General Sharma's leadership, the command focuses on countering cross-border threats, maintaining readiness in high-altitude areas, and addressing internal security issues in Jammu and Kashmir.

Experts suggest that the length of this operation may indicate the presence of well-armed and trained militants, possibly linked to recent infiltration attempts. As developments continue, the security forces are steadfast in their efforts to restore stability and ensure the safety of the local population.
