Lieutenant General Manish Erry has taken over the leadership of the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, succeeding Lieutenant General Virendra Vats, who has completed a notable three-year term.
During his leadership, Lt Gen Vats was recognized for bolstering DSSC’s standing in academic excellence, expanding joint training efforts, and enhancing international military cooperation with allied nations.
Lt Gen Erry, an officer with a commendable 37-year military career, expressed his appreciation to the civilian staff and the local community for their ongoing support. He emphasized his dedication to advancing the DSSC as a leading institution in Professional Military Education (PME) and a key player in joint military efforts within the Indian Armed Forces.
“It is an honour to lead this prestigious institution that shapes the strategic leadership of our armed forces. I look forward to furthering DSSC’s legacy as a centre of excellence in military education and cooperation,” said Lt Gen Erry.
The Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, founded in 1947, stands as one of the most esteemed military academies worldwide. Nestled in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, it provides training to mid-level officers of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as officers from friendly foreign countries.
The college’s primary goal is to deliver advanced education in the art and science of warfare, with a significant emphasis on joint operations, strategic planning, and leadership. Annually, officers engage in a demanding curriculum that covers tactics, operational strategy, logistics, military technology, and inter-service coordination.
Throughout its history, DSSC has nurtured some of India’s most prominent military figures, including Chiefs of Staff of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The institution’s role in promoting joint military efforts and international military diplomacy has made it a fundamental part of India’s defence education system.
