Lance Naik Vikas Kumar Honored with Military Burial in Pithoragarh Following Sikkim Avalanche Tragedy

Lance Naik Vikas Kumar of the Indian Army, who perished in an avalanche in Sikkim, was honored with a military funeral in his hometown of Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.

The 27-year-old soldier's body was transported to Gankot village (Sukoli), where a large crowd gathered to bid a final farewell. His elder brother performed the last rites, amidst a deeply emotional atmosphere, especially when his wife, Preeti, was overcome with grief at the sight of his coffin.

The funeral was held at Rameshwar Ghat with full military honors. The gathered crowds chanted slogans like “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vikas Amar Rahe.” Among those paying their respects was District Magistrate Ashish Kumar Bhatgain, who joined others in honoring the fallen soldier.

Lance Naik Vikas Kumar was a member of the Kumaon Regiment and was caught in an avalanche on March 29, 2026, while on patrol in Sikkim. Although his comrades survived the incident, Kumar made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Having joined the Indian Army in 2017, Kumar was married in 2023 and was the father of an eight-month-old child. He was admired for his dedication and harbored a strong desire to serve his country.

Lance Naik Vikas Kumar’s sacrifice exemplifies unyielding commitment to the nation. His courage and dedication will continue to inspire future generations, as the nation pays tribute to a brave son who gave his life in service to India.
