Lance Naik S. Rajasekhar Loses Life in Teesta River Rafting Accident During Training Exercise
Lance Naik S. Rajasekhar of the 191 Artillery Regiment died after a raft capsized in the Teesta River amid a training exercise in Pakyong district, according to police reports on Tuesday.
The accident occurred on Monday during an annual rafting training session. The raft collided with remnants of a damaged iron bridge and overturned, sweeping the soldier away in the strong current. Officials noted that the bridge had been partly destroyed during the 2023 floods, leaving debris in the river.
The Army immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, with assistance from the Teesta Rescue Centre. After continued efforts, Lance Naik Rajasekhar's body was discovered downstream at Tar Khola in Kalimpong district.
Police stated that the body was sent for a post-mortem examination, following standard procedures. The rafting exercise was conducted between Bardang and Rangpo Mining when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The death of Lance Naik S. Rajasekhar has brought sorrow to his unit. The Army extended heartfelt condolences to his grieving family and reiterated its commitment to personnel safety during training, while honoring the fallen soldier's ultimate sacrifice.
