IPS Officer Surendra Kumar Jha Takes Charge as DIG in BSF

The Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Shri Surendra Kumar Jha, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 2010 batch of the Jharkhand cadre, as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Border Security Force (BSF) through central deputation. This decision is part of regular efforts to bolster the country's primary border-guarding force.

Currently serving as DIG (Personnel) at the Jharkhand Police Headquarters in Ranchi, Shri Jha is set to take up his new role promptly after being relieved from his duties in the state cadre. This appointment places him in a crucial operational and command position within the BSF, an organization dedicated to securing India’s international borders.

Officer’s Background and Career Profile

Born on July 5, 1983, in Bihar, Shri Surendra Kumar Jha entered the Indian Police Service in August 2010 through direct recruitment via the Union Public Service Commission examination. He holds a postgraduate degree and has garnered more than 15 years of varied experience in policing, intelligence, and administration.

His significant assignments in Jharkhand include:

Superintendent of Police, Giridih district
Senior Superintendent of Police, Ranchi (Rural and urban responsibilities)
Superintendent of Police, Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Jharkhand
DIG, Bokaro Range

Throughout his career, Shri Jha has been acknowledged for his adept handling of law-and-order issues, including managing communal tensions in sensitive areas like Chatra. His commendable service has been recognized with the Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and a subsequent bar to the medal for acts of valor and distinguished service.

Before his current role as DIG (Personnel) at the state headquarters, he served as DIG of the Bokaro Range, where he was actively engaged in public grievance redressal and community policing initiatives.

Significance of the Appointment

The central deputation of seasoned state cadre IPS officers to Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) like the BSF is a long-standing practice. It aims to infuse field-level operational expertise into the frameworks of border and internal security while offering officers exposure to national-level responsibilities.

Given Shri Jha’s background in district policing, intelligence operations via the ATS, and range-level command, he is expected to make significant contributions to the BSF’s operational effectiveness, personnel management, and strategic border management initiatives.

This appointment adds to the number of Jharkhand cadre IPS officers on central deputation, indicating the state’s ongoing contribution to the national security framework. As of the latest reports, Jharkhand has about 146 IPS officers in its cadre, with a considerable number serving in central organizations.

Official Process

The Ministry of Home Affairs has officially informed the Government of Jharkhand about the appointment and requested the officer's early relief to facilitate his prompt joining of the BSF. The posting will adhere to the standard deputation terms, tenure, and emoluments applicable to DIG-level officers in CAPFs.

Shri Jha’s transition highlights the government’s focus on deploying experienced officers with proven operational credentials to pivotal roles within border security forces as challenges along India’s frontiers continue to evolve.
