Indian Coast Guard Conducts Critical MEDEVAC for Pakistani Ship Captain with Cardiac Emergency

The Indian Coast Guard recently executed a critical medical evacuation to rescue the captain of a Pakistani merchant ship who experienced a serious cardiac issue while at sea. This action underscores their strong commitment to humanitarian efforts.

The emergency involved Badar Hasnain, a 60-year-old Pakistani and captain of the merchant vessel MV Haykal. He suffered a heart stroke and collapsed while the ship was on its way to Gopalpur, Odisha.

Rapid Response by MRCC Chennai

After receiving an urgent distress call, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Chennai swiftly organized the medical evacuation, highlighting the Coast Guard's readiness to assist regardless of nationality. The ship was instructed to head towards Visakhapatnam for immediate medical aid.

On July 13, with the help of the Vizag Port authorities, Captain Hasnain was safely taken ashore using a pilot boat and transported to Queen’s NRI Hospital.

Medical Care and Stabilisation

Medical experts at the hospital initially diagnosed him with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, a critical condition resulting from brain oxygen deprivation, typically associated with cardiac incidents. He was admitted for intensive care and monitoring.

Thanks to prompt medical intervention, his condition has stabilized. Authorities have confirmed that he will return to Pakistan via the Attari-Wagah border, successfully concluding the rescue mission.

Humanitarian Gesture Amid Tensions

The Indian Coast Guard released an official statement recognizing the operation, emphasizing the effective coordination between maritime and medical authorities. Captain Hasnain's family, including his daughter, expressed their profound gratitude to the Indian government, the Coast Guard, and the medical team for their swift and compassionate actions.

As reported by ANI, this incident is seen as a rare instance of cross-border humanitarian cooperation, transcending the usual geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan.

Following the captain's evacuation, MV Haykal continued its journey under the guidance of its crew, with no further incidents reported.
