Indian Coast Guard Commissions First Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel ‘Samudra Pratap’
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has welcomed its first indigenously designed and constructed Pollution Control Vessel (PCV), named Samudra Pratap (Yard 1267), into its fleet. Inducted on December 23, 2025, under the 02 PCV project by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), the vessel boasts over 60% indigenous content, reinforcing India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

Samudra Pratap, the largest ship in the ICG's fleet, significantly boosts the Coast Guard's operational capabilities and maritime pollution response. The vessel measures 114.5 meters in length and 16.5 meters in breadth, with a displacement of 4,170 tonnes. It is equipped with sophisticated systems, including a 30mm CRN-91 gun, two 12.7mm stabilized remote-controlled guns with integrated fire control systems, and indigenously developed integrated systems for the bridge, platform management, and power management. Additionally, it features a high-capacity external firefighting system.

This vessel is the first in the ICG fleet to include Dynamic Positioning (DP-1) capability and holds FiFi-2 / FFV-2 notation certification, ensuring precise station-keeping and enhanced firefighting operations. For pollution response, it boasts advanced detection and analysis equipment, such as an oil fingerprinting machine, a gyro-stabilized standoff active chemical detector, and laboratory equipment for pollution control. These tools enable precise operations to detect spills, recover pollutants from viscous oil, analyze contaminants, and separate oil from contaminated water, both within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and beyond.

The induction ceremony was attended by DIG V K Parmar, PD (MAT) of the ICG, and Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Chairman & Managing Director of GSL, along with senior officials from both ICG and GSL.
The commissioning of Samudra Pratap represents a significant step forward in India's efforts to protect the maritime environment and highlights the Coast Guard's expanding capabilities in safeguarding the seas while promoting homegrown defense shipbuilding.
