Indian Army's Mortar Course at Infantry School Concludes with Lance Havildar Arun Kumar Honored as Top Performer
The Indian Army recently concluded its specialised Mortar Course for Junior Leaders at the Infantry School in Mhow on March 10, 2026. This course, aimed at boosting the technical skills and battlefield competencies of junior leaders, gathered soldiers from both the Indian Army and allied foreign nations for intensive training focused on mortar operations and fire support.
The closing ceremony highlighted the completion of several weeks of rigorous training aimed at enhancing the precision, coordination, and tactical use of mortar systems on the battlefield. Participants received thorough instruction on various aspects, including mortar deployment, fire control procedures, target acquisition, and coordination with infantry units to deliver effective indirect fire support during military operations.

During the ceremony, participants were urged to apply the knowledge and practical skills gained to improve battlefield effectiveness and precision in fire support. Senior instructors stressed the significant role mortars play in modern combat, particularly in delivering quick and precise indirect fire to support infantry movements.
The course also demonstrated the Indian Army’s dedication to enhancing defence collaboration with friendly foreign nations. Alongside Indian Army personnel, soldiers from Tanzania, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and the Maldives took part in the training, underscoring the expanding military cooperation and professional exchanges between India and its partner countries.

At the end of the course, top performers were acknowledged for their achievements. Lance Havildar Arun Kumar was named the Overall Best Student for his outstanding proficiency in both theoretical and practical elements of mortar operations. Additionally, Corporal Zuhain Ahmed Mohamed from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) received the award for Best Foreign Student due to his remarkable performance.

The Infantry School in Mhow, a leading training institution of the Indian Army, continues to play a crucial role in the development of highly skilled infantry leaders and the enhancement of combat capabilities.
