Indian Army to Implement Computer-Based Stage-1 Test and CDSTE to Alleviate Overcrowding in SSB Recruitment

The Indian Army has revealed significant updates to its Services Selection Board (SSB) process, which will include the introduction of a computer-based Stage-1 screening test by the end of 2026. This initiative is part of efforts to address issues of high screening-out rates and overcrowding.

Shift to Computer-Based Screening

Since 1998, the Stage-1 screening system has remained unchanged. However, it will soon transition to a computer-based format to enhance the screening process's:

  • Objectivity
  • Transparency
  • Efficiency
  • Steps to Reduce Candidate Overload

The Army has identified excessive reporting at SSB centres, particularly among non-UPSC applicants such as TES, TGC, SSC (Tech), and NCC. To combat this, several adjustments are planned:

  • TGC & SSC (Tech):
Beginning in 2027, these entries will be channeled through a new Combined Defence Services Technical Examination (CDSTE) managed by UPSC, thereby reducing the SSB call-up ratio.
  • NCC Entry:
Candidate selection now factors in graduation marks and NCC ‘C’ certificate grading with bonus marks, significantly decreasing the number of call-ups.
  • TES Entry:
The TES process is slated for integration with the NDA written examination to streamline the selection procedure.
  • Improved Date and Centre Selection

Candidates will soon be able to choose both:

  • SSB reporting dates
  • Selection centres
  • This change is anticipated to help evenly distribute candidate numbers across the centres.

    Towards a More Transparent System

The planned reforms are designed to:

  • Alleviate overcrowding at SSB centres
  • Enhance the candidate experience
  • Boost fairness and efficiency in the selection process
  • Modernising Military Recruitment

This initiative underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to updating its recruitment processes to deliver a more efficient and candidate-focused system.
