Indian Army to Enhance Firepower with Indigenous ATAGS Artillery by 2027

The Indian Army is poised to enhance its long-range artillery capabilities with the upcoming induction of the domestically developed Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) by February 2027. This system, crafted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with the private sector, is nearing a critical developmental milestone.

RP Pandey, the Project Director of ATAGS, announced that the initial unit is prepared for the pivotal "first of product model test." This test is essential for operational deployment. Successful completion will lead to the induction of the first regiment, consisting of 18 ATAGS guns, within a year, with full deployment anticipated by early 2027.

In March 2025, the Ministry of Defence finalized contracts valued at approximately ₹6,900 crore for acquiring 307 ATAGS 155mm/52 calibre guns and 327 high-mobility 6x6 towing vehicles. These artillery systems will be provided by Bharat Forge Limited, while Tata Advanced Systems Limited will supply the towing vehicles, both supporting the government's 'Make in India' initiative.

The ATAGS distinguishes itself with a firing range exceeding 40 kilometers, advanced automation, and exceptional accuracy, ranking it among the world's most sophisticated towed artillery systems. It is designed to replace older artillery, significantly bolstering the Indian Army's firepower along sensitive border regions amid escalating regional security concerns.

This development represents a crucial step in India's journey towards self-sufficiency in defense production, highlighting the increasing cooperation among DRDO, private industries, and the armed forces. As the Indian Army readies for the initial regiment's induction, the ATAGS is expected to revolutionize India's artillery prowess on the global scene.
