Indian Army Showcases Cutting-Edge Drone Technology at New Likabali Centre

India's defense capabilities have received a substantial enhancement with the Indian Army's introduction of advanced drone technologies at the newly inaugurated Drone Excellence Centre at Likabali Military Station. Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding of the Spear Corps, recently visited the facility.

This initiative underscores the Army's increasing emphasis on incorporating indigenous drone solutions for both surveillance and logistics, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh, a region known for its challenging terrain and proximity to the Line of Actual Control with China. The advanced drone technologies aim to tackle the operational difficulties presented by this sensitive area.

During the visit, Lt Gen Pendharkar was briefed on the design and development process of several cutting-edge drones crafted by the in-house team. A notable feature was a newly developed 3D-printed tactical glider intended for reconnaissance and light cargo missions, offering a cost-effective and customizable solution tailored to the Army's needs in high-altitude operations.

The centre also showcased various unmanned aerial systems with capabilities for both surveillance and cargo, designed to enhance operational efficiency in border regions. Lt Gen Pendharkar praised the team's professionalism and technical skills, highlighting the importance of such domestic innovations in reducing reliance on foreign technologies.

This development is in line with global trends in modern warfare. A study by the RAND Corporation noted a 30 percent increase in drone use for reconnaissance missions in active conflict zones, highlighting the growing dependence on unmanned systems.

The visit also aligned with the station’s recent participation in the Van Mahotsav 2025 tree plantation campaign, reflecting a commitment to both technological progress and environmental stewardship. As India continues to modernize its military infrastructure, the Likabali Drone Excellence Centre serves as a testament to the Army’s dedication to innovation and self-reliance.
