Indian Army Set to Induct AH-64E Apache Helicopters in Jodhpur, Enhancing Combat Capabilities

The Indian Army is poised to receive three AH-64E Apache attack helicopters within the next two days, with the formal induction anticipated on July 22. The helicopters are expected to arrive in Jodhpur by either tonight or tomorrow, where they will undergo a Joint Receipt Inspection before transitioning to operational service.

This marks the delivery of the first trio of six Apache helicopters being acquired for the Indian Army’s Aviation Corps under a $600 million contract signed in 2020. An Apache squadron has already been established in Jodhpur, and the helicopters are set to be stationed along India’s western border to bolster battlefield superiority.

Constructed by U.S. defense giant Boeing, the AH-64E Apache is considered among the most sophisticated multi-role attack helicopters globally. Renowned for its precision strike capabilities in challenging terrains, it is employed by the armed forces of the United States, United Kingdom, Israel, Egypt, and more.

Initially, India inducted 22 Apaches for the Indian Air Force through a 2015 agreement. The acquisition of six additional helicopters for the Army signifies a change in operational strategy, granting ground forces direct air support access for enhanced coordination during combat operations.

Fitted with a Modernised Target Acquisition Designation System, Hellfire missiles, a 30mm chain gun, and Longbow radar that enables target detection and engagement without direct visual confirmation, the Apache is engineered for high-threat environments. Its operational capabilities extend to day, night, and adverse weather conditions, making it an essential force multiplier.

Boeing states that the newly acquired Apaches will “enhance the Indian Army’s ability to offer integrated combat aviation support to land forces.” This development aligns with the Army’s modernization objectives and underscores India’s ongoing commitment to fortifying its frontline operational prowess.
