Indian Army Major Killed, Two Officers Injured in SUV-Camel Collision Near Jaisalmer Military Station
Jaisalmer, July 31, 2026: A devastating road accident near the Jaisalmer Military Station in Rajasthan claimed the life of a young Indian Army Major and left two Lieutenant-rank officers with serious injuries. The incident occurred when their private SUV struck a camel, leading the vehicle to overturn multiple times.
The accident took place at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Friday, near the War Museum in the Thaiyat Army area, six kilometers from Jaisalmer city. Major Hamza Arif, 30, from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was driving the SUV at the time. The Major had been married just a month prior to this tragic incident.
Reports indicate that the officers were returning to the Jaisalmer Military Station in a black Tata Safari SUV (registration GJ39CC1403) when the camel suddenly appeared on the roadway. With insufficient time to react, the vehicle hit the animal, lost control, and overturned four to five times, skidding nearly 100 meters before coming to rest near the Army boundary wall. The camel was killed instantly due to the impact.
Following the crash, Army personnel quickly arrived on the scene to free the officers trapped inside the wrecked vehicle. The injured were transported to the Military Hospital at the Jaisalmer Military Station (Thaiyat). Major Hamza Arif succumbed to his injuries during treatment, and his body has been moved to Jawahar Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The injured officers are identified as Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore and Lieutenant Ayushman Gusain. They are currently receiving medical treatment, but authorities have not yet released detailed information on their conditions.
Local police and Military Police have launched a joint investigation into the accident's circumstances. ASI Jagdish Charan from Sadar Police Station noted that the incident was reported late at night. Initial findings suggest that the sudden presence of the camel caused the driver to lose control, leading to the fatal accident. Investigators are looking into factors such as the unlit road stretch and the camel's access to the roadway.
Lt Col Nikhil Dhawan, the Public Relations Officer for Defence in Rajasthan, mentioned that more detailed information will be provided once all official details are available.
The Jaisalmer Military Station is steeped in mourning after the loss of the young Major, with fellow soldiers and officers expressing their shock and sorrow over his untimely death, especially as he had just embarked on a new chapter in his personal life.
The site of the accident, near the War Museum and Thaiyat area, is notorious for previous road incidents, including a tragic bus fire in October 2025.
Major Hamza Arif, originally from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, had only been married for about a month. Additional personal or unit information remains limited, as is typical following such incidents, pending official communications from the Army and notifications to the family.
The condition of the two injured Lieutenants is being closely monitored, and further information will be released as the investigation continues and official statements are made by the Indian Army and local police.
