Indian Army Finalizes Landmark Capital Procurement on GeM with ₹25.90 Crore JCB Contract

The Indian Army has achieved a significant milestone in its defense procurement strategy by completing its first capital acquisition contract through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). This marks a notable shift in its approach to procurement.

In partnership with JCB India Ltd, the Army has secured a deal for the acquisition of 93 telescopic handlers under the Buy (Indian) category, amounting to a total cost of ₹25.90 crore.

This innovative step signifies the Army's commitment to a more transparent and efficient procurement process, facilitated by a technology-driven platform. Traditionally a complex and lengthy procedure, capital procurement is expected to become faster and maintain procedural integrity through the use of GeM.

Officials highlighted that this approach paves the way for more streamlined acquisition processes for critical equipment, especially in logistics and support functions.

The acquisition of telescopic handlers is anticipated to bolster the Army’s logistics and material handling capabilities across diverse operational settings, including high-altitude and field areas.

Furthermore, this development aligns with the Government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defense, aiming to involve more domestic industries in fulfilling the armed forces' requirements.

This move is expected to set a benchmark for future capital procurements through GeM, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and indigenization within India's defense acquisition framework.
