Indian Army Completes Key 155mm Artillery Trials at Pokhran for Advanced Defence Capabilities
The Indian Army has completed pivotal trials of 155mm artillery ammunition at the Pokhran Field Firing Ranges, marking a significant advancement in the nation's defense modernization initiatives. Conducted by the Konark Gunners, these trials showcased the Army's increasing reliance on domestic systems and enhanced strike capabilities.
Located at the historical site of India’s nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998, the trials included various advanced 155mm artillery platforms, such as self-propelled howitzers. These systems are designed for precise targeting and extended range, with studies indicating a reduction in collateral damage by up to 30 percent compared to older models.
This development aligns with the Army's long-term strategy to standardize artillery systems around the 155mm calibre, a goal set for completion by 2042 as outlined by Lieutenant General Adosh Kumar, the Director General of Artillery. The focus on this calibre aims to enhance logistical efficiency and combat effectiveness across diverse terrains and operational scenarios.
India's drive toward self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing is further emphasized through these trials. Since 2020, the Ministry of Defence has enforced a phased prohibition on importing 101 military items to boost domestic production.
