Indian Army Captain Dies on Duty Due to Cardiac Arrest in North Kashmir
In a tragic incident, Captain Aman Kumar Singh, a 22-year-old officer of the Indian Army, succumbed to cardiac arrest while on duty in the Narayan area of Handwara, located in the Kupwara district of north Kashmir, on February 22, 2026. This unfortunate event highlights the harsh conditions that military personnel encounter in remote and challenging environments.
As per official reports, Captain Singh's health suddenly declined between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. while he was actively engaged in duties in the mountainous terrain. His fellow soldiers quickly administered first aid and transported him on foot to a nearby helipad for immediate evacuation. He was then flown by helicopter to the 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar. Despite extensive medical efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at around 2:00 p.m.

Captain Singh hailed from Hata village in Kushinagar district, Uttar Pradesh, though some earlier reports mentioned Bakar Abad. He had been stationed in Baramulla for a year and had recently been promoted to Captain after serving as a Lieutenant for two years. He entered the Indian Army through the Technical Entry Scheme after studying at Hallmark World School in Gorakhpur and beginning a BTech in Civil Engineering in Ghaziabad. As the only son of his parents, his untimely death has deeply affected his family and community, with his father, Yashwant Singh, working as a mechanical engineer in the private sector in Varanasi.
Following the incident, local police have commenced proceedings under applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to officially record the circumstances. Captain Singh's body was scheduled to be transported from Srinagar to Delhi, and subsequently flown to Gorakhpur airport, with an expected arrival at around 2:00 p.m. on February 23, 2026. From there, it was to be taken to his ancestral village in Kushinagar, accompanied by full state honors, to allow family, friends, and colleagues to pay their last respects.
This incident highlights the inherent risks and physical demands faced by military personnel stationed in high-altitude and isolated locations. Captain Singh's service and dedication reflect the steadfast commitment of India's armed forces, and his loss is mourned by the nation. Further information regarding funeral arrangements and any official tributes is awaited as investigations continue.
