Indian Army and Arunachal Pradesh CM Collaborate to Enhance State Development and Economy

The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, has underscored the expanding role of the Indian Army as a vital contributor to the state's progress, beyond its primary function of border protection. In a notable meeting on Thursday at the Civil Secretariat in Itanagar, Khandu conversed with the Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, and Lt. Gen. Abhijit S. Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding of the 3 Corps. The discussions focused on collaborative initiatives directed at nation-building and enhancing the state's economic landscape.
The dialogue highlighted the Army's involvement in tourism projects throughout Arunachal Pradesh, including the Vibrant Villages Programme. This initiative has reportedly improved connectivity and generated economic prospects in remote areas.
Khandu pointed out several projects such as the development of tourism in Mayudia and the Yangtse waterfall, alongside efforts to preserve military history and promote the Namti Valley war memorial. He remarked, "The Army is no longer just guarding our borders; it has become a key partner in Arunachal Pradesh’s development," acknowledging the noticeable changes in the state’s economic terrain.

The meeting also touched on strategic matters, including land issues, the enlistment of local youth into the Army, recognition for gallantry award recipients from the state, and the integration of Agniveers and ex-servicemen into state police and government roles. General Dwivedi reiterated the Army's dedication to extending its role beyond border security, in alignment with national development objectives.

This partnership comes in the wake of increased geopolitical tensions along the India-China border, particularly after the 2020 Galwan Valley incident, which has encouraged India to expedite infrastructure development in the region. The Vibrant Villages Programme, launched by the government in 2021, has produced encouraging outcomes, with a 2024 economic survey from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region indicating a 15% economic boost in pilot zones.

Khandu called on honorable members to actively engage the Army in civilian activities, positioning it as a proactive collaborator in the state’s developmental path. The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to continue their joint efforts for the advancement of Arunachal Pradesh and the broader vision of nation-building, indicating a new phase of military-civilian collaboration in the border state.
