Indian Armed Forces Induct Indigenous Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks for Tri-Service Logistics

New Delhi, October 14, 2026: The Indian Armed Forces have inducted indigenous Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks (RTFLTs) in a move aimed at strengthening logistics support across the Army, Navy and Air Force, while also advancing the country’s push for domestically developed defence equipment.

The induction ceremony was presided over by Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain, Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), underscoring the tri-service importance of the logistics platform. The new vehicles are intended to improve material-handling capability and operational efficiency across the three services, especially in environments where regular forklifts are not suitable.

Rough terrain forklift trucks are specialised machines built to lift, transport and handle heavy equipment, stores and other logistics material in difficult ground conditions. Their design allows them to function in places where conventional forklifts may struggle, making them useful for remote deployment locations, forward operational areas and field logistics installations.

The induction comes in line with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which promotes domestic manufacturing, technological self-reliance and the development of indigenous defence systems. By adopting locally developed logistics platforms, the Armed Forces aim to improve operational preparedness while reducing dependence on imported equipment.

Officials expect the addition of the RTFLTs to speed up the movement of essential supplies and equipment in demanding operational settings, improving the efficiency of logistics operations across the force. The focus on indigenous procurement also reflects the Armed Forces’ broader effort to build a more resilient, efficient and self-reliant military support system.

The induction is another step in the gradual modernisation of India’s military logistics infrastructure, with the three services looking to strengthen operational effectiveness through indigenous technology and improved logistical preparedness.
