Indian Air Force to Establish Largest Airbase in Central India at Khajuraho

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is making significant strides in bolstering India's defense capabilities with the establishment of a new airbase in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. This facility, spanning approximately 1,000 acres, is poised to become the largest airbase in Central India upon completion.

Located near the current Khajuraho Airport, the airbase is designed to function as a crucial center for both fighter and transport aircraft operations. This strategic development will enhance India's capacity for rapid deployment and logistical support across various regions. The Ministry of Defence has begun preliminary preparations, and land acquisition is projected to commence early next year, pending essential approvals.

The decision to proceed with the Khajuraho site followed an extensive survey of potential locations such as Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Gwalior. Member of Parliament Vishnu Dutt Sharma indicated that Khajuraho was selected due to its strategic location, low population density, and potential for expansion, confirming that groundwork is currently in progress.

The plateau region of Khajuraho provides favorable conditions for year-round flying operations due to its advantageous weather and minimal civilian obstacles. Its proximity to national highways and existing air routes is expected to facilitate swift logistical movements and efficient command operations.

The new base is set to complement the existing Gwalior Air Force Station, thereby enhancing coverage and operational balance throughout India's central corridor. Officials have highlighted the base's anticipated role in future combat missions, joint operations, and rapid-response deployments, drawing on insights from recent endeavors like Operation Sindoor.

Beyond its defense implications, the project is projected to stimulate regional economic development by improving infrastructure and creating jobs in the Bundelkhand area. This initiative will integrate defense and development priorities, reinforcing Khajuraho's status not only as a cultural and tourist destination but also as a vital component of India's national security framework.
