Indian Air Force Honors Late Wing Commander Devender Jeet Singh Kler VM with Ceremonial Tribute in Kolkata

Kolkata, January 31, 2026 – A ceremonial tribute was conducted by the Indian Air Force at Command Hospital Kolkata to honor the late Wing Commander Devender Jeet Singh Kler, VM, a prominent figure from the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. Wreaths were placed on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff and the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Air Command, serving as a poignant acknowledgment of his service and contributions.

Personnel from the Indian Army's Headquarters Eastern Command joined Air Force members from Advance Headquarters Eastern Air Command and Air Force Station Barrackpore to pay their respects. This ceremony highlighted the deep camaraderie and respect within the armed forces for Wing Commander Kler's role in national defense.

Wing Commander Devender Jeet Singh Kler passed away on January 30, 2026, at Command Hospital Kolkata. Known for his bravery during the 1971 war as a Flying Officer with No. 22 Squadron operating Gnat fighter jets, his efforts were instrumental in the Bangladesh liberation. He often reflected on the sacrifices made by Indian forces during the war against East Pakistan's atrocities. Notably, his father, Major General Hardev Singh Kler, MVC, AVSM, also served in the same conflict, marking a unique father-son legacy in military history.

In 1989, Wing Commander Kler received the Vayu Sena Medal for his remarkable handling of an in-flight emergency with an Ajeet aircraft in 1987. Facing a throttle malfunction during a live rocket projectile sortie, he managed a dead-stick landing, saving the aircraft at great personal risk. This act exemplified his skill and dedication, embodying the highest traditions of the Indian Air Force.

Graduating from Mayo College in 1963, Wing Commander Kler's death is mourned by veterans' associations and former colleagues who remember him as a dedicated national servant. In December 2024, during Vijay Diwas commemorations in Kolkata, he shared vivid memories of the 1971 war, underlining the lasting impact of these events on India's military history.

The Eastern Air Command conveyed deep condolences to Wing Commander Kler's family, noting that his service would inspire future generations of air warriors. The ceremony at Command Hospital Kolkata served as a dignified farewell, reflecting the armed forces' commitment to honoring their fallen heroes with respect.
