Indian Air Force Civilian Staffer Arrested in Connection with Pakistan-Linked Espionage Network

A significant counter-intelligence operation has led to the arrest of a civilian staff member of the Indian Air Force (IAF) for allegedly leaking sensitive defense information to Pakistani operatives, unveiling a broader espionage network.

Sumit Kumar, aged 36 and employed as a Multi-Tasking Staff member at Air Force Station Chabua in Assam, was taken into custody during a collaborative effort between Rajasthan Intelligence and Air Force Intelligence. He has been transported to Jaipur for further questioning.

This investigation originated in January 2026, when another suspect from Jaisalmer was detained, enabling authorities to uncover connections with Pakistani intelligence agents.

Officials disclosed that Kumar had maintained contact with Pakistani handlers since 2023, reportedly exchanging classified information for financial compensation.

The sensitive data allegedly shared included:

Details of Air Force installations, including Chabua and Nal (Bikaner)
Locations of fighter aircraft and missile systems
Sensitive information about IAF personnel and officers

Additionally, investigators discovered that Kumar facilitated the creation of social media accounts for the handlers, using mobile numbers issued in his name.

A formal case has been filed under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, along with pertinent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Authorities suspect this incident is part of a larger espionage network supported by Pakistan, and they continue to investigate to identify more operatives and connections.

This arrest underscores the persistent threat of cyber-enabled espionage and emphasizes the need for effective counter-intelligence strategies to protect national security.
