India to Establish S-400 ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ Maintenance Facility with Russian Collaboration

The Ministry of Defence has taken a significant step towards enhancing self-reliance in national defence by selecting an Indian company to establish a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility for the S-400 air defence system, known as ‘Sudarshan Chakra’. This initiative will be realized in partnership with Almaz-Antey of Russia, the system's original manufacturer.

This decision follows the system's pivotal role in Operation Sindoor, which was India's military response in May to the April 22 terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam. During an attempted drone and missile attack by Pakistan targeting over 15 Indian cities on May 7-8, the S-400 system was instrumental in intercepting and neutralizing these threats, thereby protecting military installations in the northern and western regions.

A senior official from the Defence Ministry disclosed that although the MRO facility plan had been under consideration for some time, the success of Operation Sindoor expedited its progress. The selection process for the Indian firm involved extensive security clearances and capability assessments. Engagement rules for the facility have been established, with a formal announcement anticipated soon.

The official described the initiative as a significant advancement for the armed forces, emphasizing the S-400's demonstrated effectiveness during Operation Sindoor. Establishing a local maintenance facility will ensure the system's continuous operational readiness and reduce dependence on foreign assistance.

Another official, with knowledge of the project, termed it a "landmark achievement" in India-Russia military cooperation. He noted that the decision aligns with the 'Make in India' initiative and aims to address challenges from international sanctions and disruptions in global supply chains.

India had previously reached an agreement with Russia to acquire five S-400 systems, of which three have already been delivered. During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' meeting in China on June 26, Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov confirmed that the remaining two systems are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027.

The S-400 ‘Sudarshan Chakra’, named after the divine weapon of Lord Vishnu, can engage aerial targets up to a range of 400 km. Its integration into India’s defence framework marks a significant advancement in safeguarding the nation's airspace from contemporary threats.
