India Finalises Request for Dassault Rafale Jet Acquisition, Strengthening Defence Partnership with France

India is advancing towards one of its most significant defence procurements by finalizing the Letter of Request (LoR) for acquiring 114 Dassault Rafale fighter jets for the Indian Air Force.

Sources indicate that the LoR is set to be dispatched to France in the coming weeks, marking the formal initiation of the next stage of talks under the government-to-government procurement framework.

As part of the proposed agreement, approximately 90 out of the 114 Rafale aircraft are planned to be manufactured in India through a collaboration between Dassault Aviation and an Indian defence partner. The remaining jets are expected to be delivered in fly-away condition.

The proposal has received clearance from the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), facilitating the commencement of formal negotiations once France provides details on pricing, availability, technology transfer, and logistical support.

Officials have noted that the final deal will ultimately require the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).

The Indian Air Force currently operates a fleet of 36 Rafale fighters, and the Indian Navy is preparing to induct 26 Rafale Marine aircraft for operations from aircraft carriers.

Defence officials suggest that expanding the Rafale fleet would substantially cut down on maintenance, logistics, and training expenses due to the already existing operational framework within the Indian military.

New Delhi is reportedly advocating for an enhanced role for Indian companies in the Rafale supply chain, aiming for up to 50 percent indigenous content under the broader initiatives of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

This proposed deal is increasingly seen not just as a fighter jet purchase, but as a step towards a broader India-France strategic industrial partnership involving co-design, co-development, and co-production in defence manufacturing.

Officials hinted that future collaborations between India and France could include advanced combat engine development, aerospace technologies, and expanded cooperation in the defence industry.

If concluded, the Rafale deal would be among India’s largest military acquisitions, further enhancing the strategic partnership between India and France in the Indo-Pacific region and defence sectors.
