India-Argentina Joint Army Mountaineering Expedition to Mt Kamet Flagged Off in New Delhi
The third India-Argentina Joint Army Mountaineering Expedition to Mt Kamet was flagged off in New Delhi by Lt Gen Ajay Ramdev, SM, Director General Integrated Training and President, Army Sports Control Board.
The expedition will take a combined team of Indian and Argentine Army personnel to Mt Kamet in Uttarakhand, one of the highest peaks in the country at 7,756 metres. The climb is intended to be a demanding high-altitude undertaking that brings together military personnel from both sides for a shared mountaineering challenge.

Led by Lt Col Chirag Chatterjee, the expedition includes 25 personnel from the Indian Army and 10 from the Argentine Army. The composition reflects a deliberate mix of operational experience and mountaineering expertise, with the two armies working together on a route that will test both technical ability and endurance in severe mountain conditions.
According to the broad purpose outlined for the mission, the joint climb is meant to deepen military cooperation between India and Argentina while giving personnel from both armies an opportunity to operate side by side in an extreme environment. The expedition is also expected to create space for the exchange of mountaineering techniques, operational experiences and best practices.
Beyond the sporting and adventure aspect, the undertaking is being viewed as part of wider defence engagement between the two countries. Joint activities of this kind are intended to build mutual trust and understanding, while also encouraging closer military-to-military ties through shared effort and common objectives.

The climb is expected to push participants in several areas at once, including physical endurance, mental resilience, teamwork and the ability to function effectively in harsh mountain terrain. Such expeditions are often used by armed forces to strengthen coordination under pressure, and the Mt Kamet mission is being framed in that context through its emphasis on collaboration and shared hardship.
The expedition also highlights the role of adventure-based military engagements in building interoperability and camaraderie. By working together on one of the world's challenging high-altitude peaks, personnel from the Indian Army and the Argentine Army are expected to gain a deeper understanding of each other's approaches to mountaineering and high-altitude operations.
With this latest venture, the India-Argentina relationship in the military sphere gains another collaborative activity centred on training, learning and professional exchange. The Mt Kamet expedition adds to the growing defence interaction between the two countries while giving the participating soldiers an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a demanding Himalayan environment.
