India and U.S. Prepare for Largest Joint Military Exercise 'Yudh Abhyas 2025' in Alaska

India and the United States are preparing to embark on their largest joint military exercise to date, Yudh Abhyas 2025, scheduled from September 1 to 14 in Alaska. This exercise highlights the robust strategic defense partnership between the two nations, despite ongoing trade disagreements.
More than 400 Indian soldiers, led by the Madras Regiment, will take part in the maneuvers, making it the most significant Indian participation in the exercise's 21-year history. These troops, representing various branches and services, will engage in counter-terrorism practices, field training operations, and tactical scenarios that mimic real-world combat conditions.
This year's exercise holds particular significance as it is the first joint venture following Operation Sindoor, a major Indian military initiative that reportedly left a strong impression on US forces due to its modern, integrated warfare strategies. Sources suggest the US military is eager to learn from India's experiences, reflecting a growing exchange of respect and knowledge between the two armed forces.
A significant aspect of this year's exercise will be the US Army's demonstration of the amphibious version of its Stryker combat vehicle, following India's assessment of the land-based variant. This demonstration aligns with India's specific requests and may influence future defense procurement decisions.
Since its inception in 2004, Yudh Abhyas has been conducted annually, alternating between India and the US. The exercise aims to boost joint operational readiness, improve interoperability, and enhance counter-terrorism capabilities under UN Chapter VII scenarios. Besides the tactical exercises, it also serves to build trust, camaraderie, and facilitate knowledge sharing between the two military forces.
The 2025 exercise takes place against the backdrop of ongoing trade tensions between the US and India, which have persisted since the tariff policies of former President Trump. Nevertheless, the exercise underscores the strength of defense and strategic ties between the two nations. It also highlights India's growing reputation as a capable and modern military ally, even as the US maintains its engagements with Pakistan on regional security issues.
