Inauguration of BrahMos Missile Production: First Batch from Lucknow Facility to Launch October 2025
India is on the verge of a significant achievement in its domestic defence manufacturing sector as the initial production of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from the newly established Lucknow facility is slated for dispatch on October 18, 2025. The Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, alongside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, is expected to officiate the ceremony.
Situated in Bhatgaon within the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, the Lucknow unit was inaugurated by the Defence Minister on May 11, 2025. The facility covers 80 hectares and was constructed at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore. It is equipped with state-of-the-art production lines and rigorous quality control systems to facilitate large-scale missile production.
The plant initially aims to manufacture 80–100 missiles annually, with plans to increase production to approximately 150 missiles per year as operations progress. The facility is intended to fulfill the demands of the Indian Armed Forces, bolster the domestic defence manufacturing sector, and support potential export opportunities.
The BrahMos missile, a joint development between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, can travel at speeds close to Mach 3 and has a strike range of 290–400 km, depending on the variant. The missile can be launched from land, air, and sea platforms, operates on a fire-and-forget system, and is designed to evade radar while accurately targeting its objectives.
Experts highlight that the Lucknow facility marks a critical advancement toward India's self-sufficiency in strategic defence systems, enhancing operational readiness and strategic independence. The project is anticipated to create jobs, stimulate supporting industries, and boost India's capacity to meet regional demands, including possible exports.
The forthcoming flag-off ceremony will signify the first official delivery of BrahMos missiles from the Lucknow production line, demonstrating operational readiness and the government's commitment to the Make in India initiative within the high-tech defence sector. Local officials emphasize the facility's potential to elevate the state's industrial standing and generate employment.
With the initial batch prepared for deployment, the focus will now shift to maintaining production levels, strengthening supply chains, and increasing output to meet the facility's higher annual targets, further solidifying India’s position as a self-reliant defence leader.
